just a warning
it is perhaps one of the mist depressing movies ive ever seen
I’ve been ready my whole life rwina
Just because they did it differently doesn’t mean its good.
I understand it’s easy to handwave it away with the unreliable narrator but even knowing that (which I already did) it still doesn’t make the breakdown of his relationship with Peggy significant to me. They never seemed close anyway, even before Frank became a wiseguy. The real tragedy seemed to be the breakdown of Frank’s relationship with Hoffa.
It’s a creative choice that I can understand but when the film is that long and the final act is heavily reliant on that hitting home it fell a bit flat to me.
But that’s just me.
You answered your own question. There was no relationship there to break down to begin with.
And if your criticism is that he should've written a tighter relationship for them, so the breaking down of the relationship is more dramatic, what you're actually doing is criticising the realism of the film and you'd prefer more melodrama.
pretty sure that book is pretty disputed. Keep that in mind.
tbf anything related to Hoffa’s murder is disputed but from what I read, it’s the most plausible scenario and generally agreed upon narrative
I wouldn’t go that far, but as the initial post pointed out, it feels hamfisted and underdeveloped when you see how other mob films deal with the issue.
Other mob films (for the most part) are either centered around family or by the end, have the family getting involved in some way. The family dynamic in the film feels underdeveloped because that's what it was like. When Peggy sees Frank leaving for work with a gun at an obscure hour in the morning, all he tells her is that he's going to work. That's true but he's leaving out the fact that he's going on a 3-4 day trip that'll take him up and down the entire East Coast. There's a distance there because that's how Frank wants it and as a result that's how Scorsese relays it to us. We feel the distance to his family just as they did.
People look at the eventual breakdown between him and Peggy and his attempt to reconcile as these supposed pivotal moments that come off as flat but I don't necessarily see it that way. They're pivotal enough to be shown but they aren't treated as these big dramatic things. There's no big argument, no blow off, Peggy just realizes that Frank probably killed Jimmy or at the very least, had something to do with his disappearance and it's the final straw, she just leaves. It's so easy for Peggy to break away because of the distance that was set between them all those years ago. There isn't much of a relationship there, whatever was there at one point was, as she feels, taken away by Russ decades ago. She hasn't seen Frank as her father in some time. When he does attempt to reconcile, it's only at the end of his life and at that point, I think we're more or less supposed to take it as him trying to make good with God rather than his family. I think Peggy sees that too.
The end of the film is laid out like this: Irene's death/funeral > Frank's declining health > Frank collapsing and realizing death is around the corner for him too > Attempting to make good with Peggy > When that fails and only when that fails does he turn to a priest who tells him, "We can be sorry without feeling sorry" > That signals a turning point because in the very next scene we see Frank taking a stroll down memory lane, looking at old pictures and it's really not treated as this super sad thing despite him talking about how fast time flies by. He's even joking around with the nurse a little bit. He's at peace.
a lil drunk rn so yeah probably not as well articulated as it could be but yeah
Really gotta watch this but I'm intimidated by the run time. Is it easy to sit through? Is there a good spot to split it in half?

the final 2 and a half hours are easy to sit through, took me a bit of time to get into it tho

You can split it up to 4 episodes, seen a few guys post it itt so maybe it’s common practice in film sxn
But if I were you I’d definitely try and watch it in one sitting
@Bad_Finger_Boogie rank Marty movies
NOW
Nahhhh I dunno if I can, there's just too many that I like to be honest, and some of them vary so much that it feels kinda unfair to put one next to another.
Departed definitely low tier though imo

Yeah, retired like 7 or 8 years back but denied it for a while, but yeah it was confirmed last year that he wasn't gonna be able to do this movie he was planning to do due to health.

The dementia part isn’t true

It’s one of the best edited movies in recent memory, A LOT of people have said the runtime flies by for them (as did for me)

i mean he IS even older than anyone in this movie so
my goat
Oh fr?
Yeah, I mean he is having trouble remembering lines but apparently it’a just due to being old. He doesn’t have dementia or any other memory loss related s***.
