Maybe y’all would love parasite if it came out in the 1940s
I think certain people would like it more if it was a critical and commercial failure. It’s not simply contrarianism that highlights the mentality of a lot of modern chronically online film critics and consumers, but a need to elevate under appreciated works and be more harsh towards what they perceive as unearned acclaim. If you could peer into an alternate universe where certain films failed where others succeeded, you’d be guaranteed to see a lot of hypocrisy. Actually yeah I guess it is just contrarianism, but I think the psychological aspect is a bit more sincere than that.
Buñuel exists and did it better than Bong.
You know, I should take that back bc I DO like charming actors. Setsuko Hara & Giulietta Masina being two examples. And I actually do like Jimmy Stewart in the Hitchcock movies, I guess he’s just not necessarily the reason I come, but rather a very satisfying supplement.
Perhaps the roles I especially value deliver a different sort of magnetism, a certain neuroticism, thinking back to Bibi Andersson in Persona or Isabelle Huppert in The Piano Teacher, where Huppert is more nasty, cold, even repulsive in a way, than charismatic. I’m more likely to be taken back when someone is given the chance to perform almost something like an embodied unraveling of the mind.
Being as good as they are Jimmy also had one of the most neurotic, repulsive performances in Vertigo (and It's a Wonderful Life, displaying a new found dramatic heft after the war) and Bibi was as charming as you could get in things like Smiles Of A Summer Night

A movie like Citizen Kane is essentially about a similar kind of thing and its far better so no lol
I mean s*** I just saw The Apartment which is just as much a dunk on capitalism and its a far more cleverly written film
Parasite is just a very tame Korean movie and on Bong's ideas

honestly comparing the movies from the 40s to 60s just makes this era look so f***in pathetic lmao

Parasite is just so sleek and easy to watch. Like a really catchy pop song. It's not some revolutionary masterpiece but I can't muster any negative feelings about it.

I mean a lot of my favorite movies are still from the past 30 years but theres few and far between compared to the tons of great s*** from the 40s to 60s

As if people with limited taste saying Triangle of Sadness would be better if it were made in 1950s. Again, Buñuel pulling the clock like a towel. It's dumb. Just watch more films!
Yes, not a fan of Triangle of Sadness even not being "the best film of the year" status.

Triangle of Sadness is just s*** and shows how talentless a lot of todays writers and filmmakers are (not to mention how stupid today's audiences are) that they mistake satire for over the top heavyhandedness. That garbage isn't far off from Don't Look Up and reality is that most satire mirrors s*** like that nowadays rather than actual smartly written work from greats like Wilder or Welles or Capra

It's that the director himself is a fraud and what I concur with people here call it boring.
which one out of parasite, get out, and portrait of a lady do you think has the best chance of making it to the next list?
i doubt we see all 3 of those again

I think a lot of the big name directors recently getting praise today are frauds tbh (Lanthimos, Ostlund, Chloe Zhao, Ducournau, Sean Baker, Sarnoski, Larrain, Lowery, Muschietti, Russos, etc.)
Honestly, I blame today's audiences the most. They're the ones enabling this s***

Didn't like any of them but I would say Get Out has the best chance. It is easily the most distinct out of them and Jordan Peele has been having a great career since (Sciamma hasn't fallen off by any means but she went way under the map since and Bong is going Hollywood af since)

What are some modern directors that you’re into and cosign?

Indeed. Slap Luca Guadagnino and Ari Asster in the mix and you'll get the gist. It's annoying as they praised it like Elvis Presley.

agreed. get out has already carved a tangible impact on the modern landscape which just can't be said for the others

I don’t like a lot of these directors either but I dislike even more the dismissiveness of referring to them as “hack frauds”. I’ll root for filmmakers I don’t resonate with to eventually make something that does.
Parasite > Handmaiden imo that one felt more construed tbh
Yeah Handmaiden to me was underwhelming
Russo’s are the only ones I’d say it’s appropriate to throw those terms at. They actively are anti cinema.
