SKYKILLAthe idea that luke skywalker of all people is in hiding while a couple of rookies are out fighting the first order - what is such a threat and so dangerous that luke won't stand up and fight? makes zero sense.
whatever idea they had, even if i disagree with it, they didnt do a good job conveying it on screen.
what they should have had is built up kylo and snoke (i think snoke was a wack character, but whatever) and then have luke clash with them at some point. we get to see some of luke's incredible powers. by having kylo struggle with rookies in the first film tho, it kind of ruins that whole idea tho. luke would mop the floor with anyone the first order were to put in front of him.
How is he going to fight if he cut himself off from the force and lost all faith in the Jedi order

But what Luke did at the end with Kylo was the most Jedi s*** I’ve ever seen and true to what Yoda was teaching him in Empire Strikes Back

he has a genuine redemption in this film, a genuine reason to be reclusive feeling like the path of the Jedi need to end.

the fact that he struggled at all makes him look weak. rey is a rookie with no training. someone well schooled in the force should make quick work of a beginner.
to compare - anakin, who was the chosen one and seen as the ultimate prodigy, got schooled in mere seconds when he tried to rush in and confront count dooku. then, after gathering his senses, he lasts another 30 seconds or whatever until he gets his hand chopped off. dooku is superior to kylo for sure, but anakin was also 10x what rey was at that point.
for kylo ren to be portrayed as a powerful force user on the dark side - you simply cant have him looking weak and struggling with rookies. i dont care about getting hit by chewie or he felt bad about killing han. its bad storytelling and it makes no sense.

I love arguing and discussing the minutia of these films but to me at the end of the day is are the films entertaining. The OG trilogy had some goofy s*** too (ROTJ lol) but the newest trilogy just didn't capture the fun or soul of the OG trilogy but that's fine cause neither did the prequels, for different reasons.

i know im joining the convo late af and maybe this has already been said
but i think TROS is what put a really unfair nail in TLJ.
since this was an unplanned story, there could've been some yes-and-ing in terms of passing the baton. TROS could've been a movie that made TLJ make sense and feel more solid as a middle piece of a trilogy. they could've yes-and'd the choices and taken them and tried to do something.
rather than just say no, nah, not that, forget that, mock that, make fun of that and end up being a movie that is nothing through being totally reactionary

it matters when you're building up a trilogy and preparing for the other 2 movies to come.
you mentioned luke chopping off vaders hand in ROTJ - ROTJ is the final film in the trilogy. that is the final confrontation. vader stomps him in empire, and in episode 4 we just see vader battle obi wan.
imagine in a new hope if luke confronted darth vader with no training and somehow came out of it unscathed, or even got a decent hit in. that makes vader look weak and less imposing as the big bad villain of the movies.
its just bad writing across the board, you keep defending these awfully written characters. the fans arent dipshits - more than the fans have let their opinion known on these movies.
