Having researched this a little more, it's not clear if they ever used this name at the time, or if it was invented later by fans to describe this era. Probably the latter.

The name dates back to at least 1965 (when the compilation above was first released).

Concert posters from back then often inserted an adjective into the name "Beatles" for marketing purposes, e.g. "The Sensational Beatles" or "The Dynamic Beatles", but the specific inclusion of "Young" does make it sound like a retronym. But whatever. I'll keep imagining they went around calling themselves 'young savages'
