The short version: A combination of a discrepancy with the business of the podcast and gradually souring relationships finally hitting a wall.
The long version: Whenever they all sat down to iron out a financial structure for the podcast, Joe, Rory, and Mal were made profit partners with one another. As in, they're each entitled to a certain percentage of the profits of any income made by the podcast.
At some point in the future, Joe regretted this. He wanted them to be employees and have a set salary. Rory and Mal weren't going. For a long time that disagreement remained in the background, but it was contributing to organic tension built up through years of doing the podcast together.
Rory and Mal began to generally feel disrespected and unheard, and Joe seemingly felt like they weren't meeting his level of contribution or commitment to the show and eventually the network he was trying to create. At some point after their Spotify deal ended, they started their Patreon monetization, and a CashApp deal was in the mix; Rory and Mal wanted access to the accounting information for the podcast to make sure that everything was as it should be. Again, they're profit partners so obviously they'd want to be certain they're getting the percentage they're entitled to. Joe felt like this implied that they thought he was robbing them. He resisted giving them access to the accounting, and when he did Rory and Mal felt like it wasn't the full accounting.
Tension between Rory and Joe on-camera (largely Rory being angry and aggressive towards Joe) hit a point where Joe texted Rory before one episode and told him to take a few weeks off. Rory felt like that was a good idea and accepted. Mal didn't like that this decision was made without a group discussion first and sat out along with Rory.
Joe calls in Ice and Ish (his current co-hosts) to fill the slot for a few weeks while the original cast tries to work things out in the background. Rory, Mal, and Joe all meet at Parks' house during this window of time and have a heated conversation that apparently almost turned into a fight between Joe and Mal. Mal claims that he was disrespected by Joe in a way that was irreparable for their relationship. My memory gets a little hazy here, but the original group comes back for Episodes 436 and 437 . Rory and Mal don't show up for 438, so Joe and Parks do the episode alone and Joe fires Rory. He says Mal can come back, but Mal doesn't. Joe spins his version of the story for weeks, and Rory and Mal tell their side in a $2 Vimeo video. The JBP cast permanently changed to Ice and Ish, Rory and Mal create a podcast together, and here we are.
