Green is growing on me. Smile and O Girlfirend are fantastic. Really wish the b-sides were on Apple Music so I could make an alt track list with Starlight and Alone. The b sides for Pinkerton, Blue, and the bonus tracks for Red and a couple others are on there, but that’s it.

ideally if we alter all post pinkerton albums we only have classics and the best run of any bands ever

this live version of o girlfriend where he lets loose on the solo instead of redoing the verses melody and actually even expends it (im pretty he was doing it due to fans criticism that green solos were too gimmick which is what birthed maladroit and its shredding solos and rocking songs)

    this version is everything man

  • Dec 28, 2020

    here’s some fact around o girlfriend @HeyFella @deepsleep

so the whole song is about this girl rivers was seeing at the time

so far nothing out of the blue

what’s funny is that he demo this other song ive always loved we only had two clips out of it for years - it’s from the green sessions, and the lyrics didn’t seem to be much about anything, song is titled burning sun and only finally surfaced in full some 5y ago:

well rivers went back to this song to rework it years later, retitled as weekend girl for the ewbaite era but nothing came out of that, however for pacific daydream it came through as weekend woman (when we hear the piano home demo clip he had going on for weekend woman my assumption is that he had the chorus hook of the song going around but no satisfying verses, so the hook came first and i think he later took the burning sun verses in when revisiting that one? just a guess)

and as you can hear on the final song we got the burning sun verses melodies on weekend woman with brand new lyrics, what makes this more fascinating is while burning sun original song wasn’t about anything, the final lyrics he wrote for weekend woman is inspired by the same girl who inspired o girlfriend on green, and it doesn’t stop there as it is what inspires the lyrics to “do you wanna get high?” on the white album also!

so yeah two of the best songs on white and on pacific daydream are about the same girl that he wrote about on o girlfriend- so they’re genuine, rivers doesn’t take d**** but he used to and felt like writing back again from that pov for storytelling, bringing us some of his best modern songs, im obsessed with both of these

listening to these three songs one after another: o girlfriend, do you wanna get high and weekend woman knowing it’s about the same relationship is so amazing

“O Girlfriend” was always my favorite song on the album. Didn’t know it was about a real person, given how intentionally impersonal a reputation the lyrics on the Green album have always had. Underrated record, though. “Knock-Down, Drag-Out” might actually be my go-to from it these days, or “Photograph” (although I do prefer live versions of it, where Rivers tends to put more sauce on the solo).

yeh rivers admits it openly but what he says makes so much sense tho, it’s like letting out a feeing that you don’t know where it comes from but then it clicks when you look back..

but yeah o girlfriend is the one exception and if you listen to these other songs about the person it gets very detailed and fascinating, beautiful stuff - and i don’t wannna hear it any other way from the old heads the final version of weekend woman destroys the burning sun demo 😤

green is one album i go a lot more these days, i love myself and love the album, im not part of the ones that wants something from the band and just take it as it is, it’s a fun album and the most early beatles they ever got (again the b side starlight and always, personal favorites) what fascinates me today is that lookin back, altho this can go for other weezer albums but his method and the mission he was on to make the green album like his career depended on it put him in a spot of songwritting and hit maker we never seen it since

like after green there’s always songs that are like oh this is so blue, this is so pinkerton, this is so red, etc, and yeh soooommme songs have some green feel but they always expend and take away from the green formula: see dreamin’ the way it goes on the melody and attack is so green album but then there’s this break that cuts the gimmicks off and of the course the mellow bridge with brian singing, even weekend woman based off of burning sun sounds nothing like the green formula!

and today that makes me appreciate the green album and it’s formula so much more, it’s forever an early 00 record, like a polaroid

i think it’s time for us to embrace it, we were just insecure rivers wouldn’t bring us honest songs and intense material again but he did since, plenty times, and that brings us now a new appreciation for the exercise that was green

    photograph is a banger

brightening day the b side is a bop too!

love you my brother hope you had an amazing wholesome christmas!

Realizing Time Is Running Out by Muse sounds like a Weezer joint to me. I’m pretty sure they were influenced by Weezer a bit around that time.

Another random thought is I’d love for Weezer or even just Rivers to release a singer songwriter folk record.

There’s some gems on the 2 newer ones but personally I’m not big on either. That being said I’ve been considering giving them another shot, so maybe try yourself.

    maybe not a coincidence heh?

Muse in 2004, inspecting Weezer's Video Capture Device DVD and the Deluxe edition of the Blue album

matt has said he loves everything weezer does

here’s a bit of an interview from 2001:
Matt: "I like the new Weezer album (the green album). It's short and simple and I like that. When I first heard it, I didn't like it at all but it's really grown on me. I'm mainly saying that because it's been really slagged off in NME. I don't know. I'm looking Out for something explosive and exciting and new, but everything's all (pulls miserable face) English and self-conscious and can't let go. Know what I mean? I want something that rocks out a bit more."

i can’t find it but i think he said something along the same lines regarding hurley when it was slammed again by nme so he stuck up for the album

dom also said weezer one of his fav band, him and chris were spotted at multiple weezer shows all the way from 2002 to 2011 at the memories shows, in 2019 they even finally toured together.

    here’s a treat

also here they are selecting undone videoclip for a show, so they talk about the video a bit:
