Homer didnt exist. Rather its ancient folktales that the greek bard told while travelling from town to town. Hence why it rhymes, so they could remember it. You could compare it to the grimm fairytales being one big book. All stories made by various people and collected over the years. Yet, there is not a grimm brother who actually made all those fairytales himself.

The iliad was "completed" this way. After that was done, the greek people came up with the oddysee in the same way. Then it was atributed to homer. In ancient times, there where a lot of works attributed to homer. To give the works authority. Eventually all works where dropped except for the two main ones. Historians are sure those were at least works by different writers. I'm convinced numerous bards composed all the work, adding and removing parts to make it as epic as possible and earn money and commemorate the very real Troy war. With other words the works are essentially full on musical albums, with only the lyrics remaining.

I love the Homer Question. It’s definitely impossible to know but I like to think he was born Melesignenes, took on the name Homer and was a blind thief, plagiarist and con man

unfortunately noone reads homer these days, the fact that ancient tragedies are still in the stores is more of a relic of traditional western education system that was into ancient greece as the prototypical republic state

i means it not possible to know considering the formalization of the work took hundreds of years, so it couldn’t be one person, the same applies to most epic poems like the Mahabharata
