Yeah I guess I can see both sides, I wouldn’t say Ye’s early stuff is tainted for me but I think I do take him a lot less seriously on any album and his voice annoys me more because I’ve heard him talk too much
i'm just imagining you listening to can't tell me nothing and thinking to yourself "hmmm there really isn't anything i can say to this guy" lmao

That’s fair mate, each to their own.
R Kelly.
The morally repugnant feeling you get when you hear a song by him will fade if you listen enough. You just gotta push thru until you don't care anymore
what did Chris Hardwick do?
Allegedly sexually abused an ex-girlfriend and had her blacklisted from the industry when they broke up. Looked it up, though, and he did eventually get his job back. Just feels like he dropped off the face of the Earth.
Whichever makes good music, don't give a s*** about who's cancelled or not.
You still listen to R Kelly music?
Kanye is a tough case because he DOES write about himself on an almost song by song basis. There's no separation between himself and his work. So if you hate the guy, you're going to struggle with his writing. That's been the case since day 1.
But personally I tend to think of old Kanye and new Kanye as different entities because he had different circles of people around him that were influencing him, and the impact of the trauma that he experienced in his thirties cannot be discounted.
The early Kanye albums make me happy-sad. They're bittersweet. But I still love them dearly. Can't imagine throwing them in the trash for whatever he may do now.
My golden rule in music listening is separating the art from the artist until the art becomes the artist.
What I mean is, Miles Davis is one of the greatest musicians of our lifetime. He was also known to be a d***head, an abuser (shoutout to Betty Davis, the "one" that he "couldn't tame" by his own definition, an underrated rock artist.), and just an unpleasant person to be around.
You can't really hear all that from a nigga blaring a horn.
Like Badu says all that dumb, woke s*** every now and then. But that doesn't get in the way of the music cause i give a f what she thinks. Shawty made Mama's Gun, I give a f about her backwards "peace and love everybody" politics or social conservatism ("all girls should have a dress code"). It's just opinions. So even though Kanye has turned into the antithesis of most of the things he used to stand against, I don't think it's worth me personally not listening to anymore of his music but it does sadden me listening back on what he used to be.
Now (for me) it's difficult if say your whole career is known as a s***symbol and the majority of your songs are about s***in graphic terms.....and you're known for doing s***crimes.
It's hard (for me) to listen to Ignition remix knowing that the original lyrics was supposed to be from the perspective of a gym teacher. :word:
It's hard (for me) to listen to any Kelly s***joint when it's more than possible bruh singing to my lil cousins in high school.
it's also the same when known repeat abusers of women have....very violent lyrics. It's just very hard to keep listening.
But I don't look at anyone like they're devil's spawn for listening personally cause music is music. And I'm black, so it's inevitable I'ma hear step in the name of love or your body's calling whenever I'm outside. I just walk past and keep pushing. I had memories with all those songs too, but it comes a point where those memories of yesterday just ain't enough to wipe out the actions of today y'know?
Tbh, I don't think listening to a "cancelled" artist alone is bad as long as you're not financially supporting them.
I've bootlegged a lot of R Kelly and TI's music from the get go. I still listen to it but I'm not putting a penny in their pockets.
You still listen to R Kelly music?
Yes, I do.
Would never stop, I grew up on it.

it's also easier to skate by when the music you make during your "I'm getting cancelled time" is good.
For example, ye and Case Study 01 just were not good like that. And I can give a damn how much KTT gasses ye up, yall are biased and therefore an unreliable source. People blamed "twitter" for Case Study 01 not really popping when, outside of Cyanide, Daniel Ceasar just.....was meh on that album.
In comparison to
when Kendrick was on his "respectability politics" gimmick and damn near alienated a good portion of his black audience when he said that dumb s*** during Mike Brown, still dropped one of the greatest albums of the last decade.
It also helped he better voiced his opinion on that last verse of Blacker The Berry (which while I still have issues with, made me understand his position a WHOOOOOLE lot more than that "we gotta love ourselves first" s*** he said)

Artists are teflon until the hits dry up. MJ was "eccentric" until the music industry lost its use for him, then the public chewed him up and spit him out.

lmfaooo

this is facts. Your goodwill goes as far as your talents go.
I do think that the idea that your morality is in question because you listen to a song by an artist who's cancelled is hilariously dumb.
Like, who someone is as an individual should not be in question just because they bump 12 play.
EYE didn't do anything to anyone, EYE I am just enjoying the song, that's it.
Implying that someone supports that person's actions because they listen to their song is so, so nasty
finally some thoughtful opinions on this exact topic on KTT. u love to see it.
y’all were down TRAGIC when kanye first came out as a white supremacist. rarely seen such delusion.
Policing people for their music choices because of what entertainers do in their own personal life off camera is a slippery slope.
The real moral of the story is to separate the entertainer from real life. We don't know these people, and we should honestly keep it that way.
The world of celebrity is one that is not like the common person, and whats normal there would make most cringe.
And I used to be like militantly angry about the R Kelly s***. Like would get viscerally mad if I heard a friend or just a group of people playing it.
But over the last 2 years it's like, you deadass cannot escape the nigga.
Majority of every verzuz has had at least a song that either that sick ass nigga wrote, produced, or was a feature of. Even the Isley Brothers s***.
I think what did it for me was, I was invited with a friend to watch a drag show contest, and it was Lady Gaga theme night.
And my nigga, Do What You Want came on for one of the contestants.
And niggas was going CRAZY! And like, majority of the crowd were women and folx of the lgbtq community and they was singing along bruh.
How (and this is rhetorical) do you deal as a society with the fact that someone that by all accounts, is truly a monster and a horrific person, but literally gave so goddamn much s*** to music that no matter where you are, you'll always hear him?

With r Kelly I'm pretty sure he doesn't make money from streams/sales
He has to tour to make money iirc, he's illiterate, didn't read his contracts and got robbed of his right to his music (allegedly)
That's what makes me not care when people listen to him cuz he can't make money of of it - if the canceled does get royalties, I'd just illegally download their music, idc
Personally, I try to not promote nor financially support artists I don't f*** with for whatever reason

I don’t think it’s always a question of you supporting the artist’s objectionable behavior, just the artist’s objectionable behavior not being a dealbreaker for you. Using Kellz as an example, they’re bothered that you’re not more bothered by him raping middle schoolers.

Do what you want with my body??? 💀
I heard that the music video (never came out but leaked) even had them acting out sexual assault
All the songs lady gaga has and they pulled out that one too.... They knew what they were doing lol

I respect that tbh.
EYE just don't view it that way. The idea that i'm supporting the person, and the action, simply because I'm listening to a song or watching a movie that I enjoy doesn't sit right w/me.
But,
I can understand how that may be a bridge that some don't want to cross which is totally fine.
