After seeing some of Bryson Tiller’s comments the other day about how he would be completely content just getting his bag and playing a PND role in the OVO sweatshop, I have been curious.
When did this shift occur?
We are a decade past Meek Mill tripping over his own feet to call out Drake for it specifically (who only came out of it bigger), and a year and a half out from Kendrick basically asserting that hip-hop needs to be purged of artists who don’t uphold traditions like that.
Also, artists that fit the mold of “real hip hop” aesthetics and would be assumed to care about artists writing their own lyrics, are continuously having reference tracks leaked (Pusha T, Joey Bada$$, CyHi, Royce da 5’9) or are known to be writers.
Kinda just feels like everyone wants to stance like they care while getting paid.
Does it impact your perception of an artists output to know they have writers, does it depend on who it is, etc?
My personal opinion is that I embrace collaboration and think it can bring out the best out of artists in certain situations. I also think there is a fine line of collaboration versus someone just writing all your s***. Additionally I think they obviously should be credited even if it’s a taboo sort of thing in the genre. All that to say I 100% respect people’s opinion if they view it as a “mark” on your overall standing with your pen (to a degree)
it’s just different for rap. idc about any other genre but if you rap and tryna claim you the best you just can’t have writers
I wouldn’t be content as a ghostwriter like working in the shadows feels kinda lame I don’t knock anyone who feels otherwise being an acclaimed writer though seems like the perfect gig forthcoming collaboration is good for everybody
Whole industry uses ghost writers, dorks just don’t wanna accept it
all for Bryson or anyone wanting to be a ghostwriter. the critics will critique but whatever man. I had the chance to write a song for someone (nothing major) but I loved what it turned into and would love to do more of that
As someone who makes music, I love when artists get their credit. That’s why I revealed that QM wrote Drake’s Blessings verse years ago. QM wasn’t credited so he’s a confirmed ghostwriter

whats with this all holy main character complex yall got going on
writing for others is awesome and fun and leads to wonderful music
ghostwriting is just weird and always will be. credit motherfuckers. and if you don’t, youre weird
it’s on a song by song basis. i’d be heartbroken if jay z didn’t write song cry but if he had help with i just wanna love you idc. the best music is collaborative
I mean more rappers use writers than don't. Nowadays would rather have a real rapper writing the song than AI, regardless if the writer is the performer or not. If the music is good then the music is good. The best of the best of the best write their own s*** though
