If artists are getting a fraction of a fraction of a penny per stream.. but even the bigger artists are faking their streams, how does any of this even work anymore?

How is anyone even making money off the actual music if you’re paying to make it look like the music is actually being played.

And I’m not talking merch, touring and all that. I mean strictly the music itself.

It feels like this is a big part of why the music itself seems to be in such a weird space. Music has just become the vehicle used to sell you other s***. Which I guess… is what it always was when it comes to the industry???

Maybe this is why the back catalog and who owns their masters has become such a huge talking point these last few years because that’s where the money is at with the actual art itself. Especially with sync licensing and all that. People have long said tv/movie money is different.

1. Keyshia Cole is doing a 20-year album anniversary tour with five other established artists on the bill. The Weeknd is doing an album trilogy tour and the only other artist on the bill is Carti. In 2022 and 2023, the only other artist was Kaytranada, who, no disrespect to him, isn’t exactly the most popular artist in the world.

2. The Weeknd is one of the highest streamed artists in the world. He is arguably the poster child for Spotify. He has:

• the highest streamed song of all time
• most monthly listeners for years
• most number of songs with a billion streams
• two of the Top 3 highest streamed songs ever
• and two of the Top 6 highest streamed albums ever.

And Blinding Lights is the #2 highest streamed song ever on Apple Music as well.

No disrespect to Keyshia Cole whatsoever, but she isn’t even in the same stratosphere as The Weeknd when it comes to streaming numbers.

This idea that y’all try to purport on here that The Weeknd is some legacy act who fills up stadiums based on old music is just completely wrong and ridiculous

Really goes to show just how irrelevant charts and stream data should be. But I know it's still some smooth brain trogolodyte motherfuckers who are going to continue to swear by numbers.
