Only use MAL to read synopsis tbh. The ratings in these anime sites always high asf, how every anime a 7 or 8?
The logic is either people don’t finish anime that they think are bad, or some just rank everything they like 10/10
Most reliable list on MAL is “most favorited” because it really shows the most beloved anime
(However it’s not a place to find unpopular anime)

true

I've been meaning to ask this for awhile but, how much attention do you guys pay to stuff like mal reviews/scores, subreddits and youtube reviews?
like, is any of that enough to make you drop/dislike a series or make you pick up a certain series just by how popular it is?
personaly, I have what some would call a ''trash taste'' but if I can emotionaly connect to a story or character then I'm sold.
Overall MAL reviews/score don't affect my decision making because I don't know what the tastes of those people who rate it are. If it's the rating of someone I know, I might take it more seriously. Like for example if someone on friends list really cared about cinematography and that was the main driving force behind their ratings, I'll consider watching some of their high rated shows because I care about cinematography too. As for MAL popularity affecting my decision ratings, hell no lmao. That's the anime equivalent of thinking McDonalds is the best food in the world because its the most widespread.
Subreddits I have the same mindset. Unless I know the person and know what they value in anime, their opinions are worthless unless they actually explain what they liked about a show when they talk about it. Or at the very least, being able to look at their MAL/Anilist profile so I can look at their overall ratings to try and figure out myself what their tastes is.
Basically I do my best to not let other people decide for me. I look at the cover, read the synopsis, and look at the staff who are working on it. If I let other people's opinions decide if I watch a show or not I'm going to miss out on a ton of hidden gems.
8+ on MAL but one of its top review trashes it (like verily, <5) is good indicator that s***s overrated
I find 7 nearing 8 score to be the sweet spot, often they enjoyable, some can be as great as the highly rated entries too but this where the seasonal releases backfire cus a lot of attention is diverted toward stuff that gets more hype are undermining interest in "minor" releases. Coupled with bs like circlejerk voters and s*** only gets more sus

When it comes to friends, I also consider their taste in other things too....for example If we like the same games/food/whatever I'll take their opinion more seriously cause I already can connect with them on multiple levels besides anime.
Yeah, I dont think someone posting '''X anime is the best oat'' has any value to it unless there are at least a few solid reasons for that...
Dont get me wrong, I'm more than open to recommendations but like you said I dont let others decide for me.
What made me ask this question was me thinking why do we label liking certain anime as trash taste or liking less known stuff as ''expert'' when there's no right and wrong in art forms??
For picking up s*** and finding interesting stuff yeah, for dropping it hell no
I decide for myself if i like it or not
yeah i def use sites and lists like that to decide which anime to start sometimes, but i’ve never dropped one cuz i noticed it had a bad score
When I want to find new stuff I just search for anime made by the same studios/directors/mangakas I enjoyed previous work of
this the best method tbh
yo guys is Demon Slayer good?
edit: page 300
it’s nice, you’ll like it if you normally dig Shōnen

You're right there isn't a right or wrong in art, but this is the general theme I've seen when it comes to people labelling anime.
Trash = High amount of viewers, liked by casual watchers but disliked by hardcore watchers.
Expert = Not popular, liked by hardcore watchers but disliked by the few casual watchers who ended up giving it a try.
Then there's stuff like Hunter x Hunter, FMA:B, Monogatari, Haikyuu, etc., which have a high amount of viewers and are liked by both casual and hardcore viewers.
golden boy
Yeah this and GTO are the funniest animes ever to me. Could watch those countless times
Is dororo worth a watch? Saw it gettin a lot of hype when it aired, but now it doesn't really gets mentioned anywhere

Exceptional story, crappy animation.
Overall I'd rate the story a 8/10, and the enjoyment factor a 9/10
Characters and development also a 9/10
Overall an exceptional anime.

High 7s and 8, 9s are what a I watch
Anything below a 7 is usually trash to mid at best.
