tried watching gintama.. got like 20 episodes in and this not as funny as everyone makes it out to be, also not too crazy about the whole sci fi/fantasy aspect of the show

Already did. Good first episode with some great shots. The way this scene
transitioned into this scene
by using Hori's reflection in the window was so well done. I'm not sure if that was how it was done in the manga, but if the anime director came up with that transition they deserve a ton of credit.
Even though the director is hit/miss (though I blame him picking lame material more often than not), he also did Shinsekai Yori which is one of the finest anime ever made imo so I knew he was gonna knock this out the park
