Although I will say
if you can provide valid criticism for something (not just “mid” to your point) I don’t think you HAVE to just like something because of who said it and what they mean historically to hip hop. Always should be open to different opinions but founded in real thought
So many people genuinely don’t know how to listen to rap lyrics. Like even if the artist isn’t doing anything fancy, people don’t know what they’re rapping about.
I think a lot of people just be listening but not actually a***yzing everything that’s been said because of all the other references occurring within the verse. like I think there’s static between 40 and Drake (only on 3/43 songs, Drake opens the album basically throwing his mans under the bus) yet you don’t see it really being talked about or when you actually break it down to someone, they like “oh I could see it”
just is what it is. it’s where we at with it unfortunately. once we started valuing the flow, melodies and beat more than the actual quality of the lyrics, it was a wrap. we too far gone now

“ don’t think you HAVE to just like something because of who said it and what they mean historically to hip hop.” - didn’t mean to imply that if that’s what you got from the OP ..
I’m simply pointing out the lack of engagement with the content itself, which is the point of this sort of exhibition ..not the artist/relevance they have, hence the convo being taking over about a hairstyle.. I welcome the critiques, if they’re actually critiquing the meat and potatoes of the art.. issue I’m having is ppl not being able to identify what the meal is or nor can than explain what it tastes like

“ if the artist isn’t doing anything fancy, people don’t know what they’re rapping about” - this is the glaring realization that’s making me sad a lil lol
loving this angle of if you didn't think the freestyle was all that then you ain't a true hiphop fan lmao

i work at a cafe and play p much whatever (been playing the new zay and mike x earl album a lot)
i’ll get complaints every once in a while about the “vulgarity” or “language” when i’m playing some of the most laid back s*** in the world
i got another friend there that plays the horniest, gayest, music (ponyboy by sophie is a weekly classic) when they’re in charge of music and no one ever complains
it’s insane how folks don’t really know what they’re listening to but if it’s rap, they will ask for it to be turned off

Eff it ima just start quoting myself lol

I don’t understand why that’s soo difficult to discern in the text?

people proving your point in this thread about a lack of literacy
just save yourself the time at this point man

I know fam I was just saying. As much as I think we suffer from lack of literacy I think we also suffer from group-think where a more contemporary hip hop used to be filled with different niches and pockets on how people felt it seems like it’s become more binary as of late at least to me
Dumbest era of humanity. Even cavemen would think this society is dumb as bricks
Cavemen were smart dude
Worked like 12 hours a week. Then sat around and philosophized and raised kids and figured s*** out
With all the fanfare surrounding the Jay freestyle I’m starting to see that our conversations within the artform aren’t spearheaded by hip hop fans fr..
Most of the general critiques and detractors on social media didn’t really say anything about the actual content.. you’d get ‘mid’ trash’ (which tells me you’re just trolling because you can’t either articulate why you didn’t like it.. )
No discussions about the bars, references technique acumen, interpretive wit etc. most of the discourse was about his appearance lol
A got me to thinking that lyrical assassins like Jay must be like ppl with 20/20 vision reading braille.. I noticed the disconnect when ppl couldn’t even make out the clear shots/jabs and only able to comment on the more surface bars I.E - ‘cost a b to say mind’ on some ohhh that’s Beyoncé lol
Not only were some of these line genuinely hilarious and entertaining, but the schemes on the backhand were incredible
It wasn’t the best thing ever, but seeing a 56 year old outbarring mfs 20 years younger than him still is nothing to scoff at.. I realized, Bush’s ‘No child left Behind’ failed us.. lol
What gives ?
1. Drake
2. Tupac
3. Biggie
4. Jay Z
Abysmal gap
5. Big L
6. Kendrick
7. Eminem
8. Nas
9. Kanye West (lol)
10. MF Doom

At least around the freestyle its cause stan wars. Basically now when you beef with an artist you beef with all of their stans plus people who hate you with rally behind the other person.
A lot of guys here needed “bills in their face no wonder they’re ducking Drake” explained to them like it was The DaVinci Code
Ngl it started with the new ATL dominating in the mid 2010s. What happened was then the major guys started to bite their swag (Kanye, Drake, etc)
While iconic, that 2016 XXL freshman list really did damage to hip hop lmaoo

How did we lose it all

ATL becoming the capital of hip hop was truly the beginning of the end. Should've never left NY or the West

I mean, the discourse surrounding the freestyle seems to be pointing to the deterioration in the literary elements that makes a 16 verse hot or mid.. noone’s talking about anything he’s actually saying..especially those critiquing the performance. Just seems like an avoidance thing because you can’t really comprehend what you’re wearing so you’d deflect to arbitrary points like his hair..

Nah I agree. Maybe not the best example to get my point across because it does just kinda devolve into nothingness specifically for the Hov s***. I was kinda using your point as a springboard for mine. Definitely agree and wasn’t trying to misconstrue your point

I guess I ain realize how prominent they were in our culture ., even when there were jay v nas Stan’s in the early 00s, there was still connective tissue to the MUSIC they made debates special ..
This Kenny v Drake season is bleeding over into literally everything
I’m finna take my ball home bro lol
