    RIP PRINCE

any producer that grew up in this era knows for a fact that people emulating his sound eventually created a subgenre that exploded in the early 2020s that you may not have heard of

its called hyperpop and rage which is a direct emulation of pierre and ronny j production style and created one of the biggest stars of the decade so far....yeat (not the biggest fan but doesnt matter in this context)

pierre had a chance to take his sound to the next level like everyone else that emulated him actually ended up doing.

this is something me and my other producer friends talked about before too.

You know you’re probably the first person I’ve heard connect Pierre to hyper pop. Rage obviously makes sense given the use of aggressive synths + clap on 2&4 + simple 808 patterns. But I’ve really never considered Pierre to be this foundational piece in hyper pop

    PAINMAN

Nintendo wasn't gonna work with no f***in rappers in 2017

Maybe more open nowadays since they've been expanding their brands to more western media (Hollywood) but slim chances still

Yeah, I think it would’ve been easier to work with capcom or Konami.

Look imo im not expert but i consider pierre a part of this movement and he deserves his credit for it

I don’t understand how metro is the only producer able to build a brand off his name these days

Because he's been able to stay in the mainstream spotlight for 10+ years due to having real genuine relationships with a majority of the artists he has worked with. Typically producers have a transactional relationships with artists so after their buzz is over they just fall off but Metro is friends with these niggas so they kept hopping on his production regardless of what was hot/trending.

  • Jun 28, 2025

    nintendo dont want him bro

  • Jun 28, 2025

    love pierre though

  • Jun 28, 2025

i should have made another thread to better explain what i wanted to without derailing the thread in any way but you raised a good point i just wanted to say i didnt mean to diminish his artistic capabilities but how the mainstream doesnt care about producers and if you have a sound that can be "improved upon" in any way , other producers will do that.

and yeah hyperpop, rage, new jazz. all these subgenres are just fads that are all basically dead or out of favor in the underground from true enthusiasts.

i still listen to pierre to this day i think monica lewinsky is a highly underrated song the early tlop tapes are timeless to me.

nintendo soundtracks are more than just 2 bar loops with a 2 step hi hats and 808 lmfao that's why they hire composers to make that s***. they're pretty complex and if you're a music theory nerd it's fun to dive into.

alot of the type beat producers on youtube used to make pierre beats actually a large portion of them especially around the time the subgenre came up.

it just became something different with people that listened to carti and also were into soundcloud still around 2019-late 2020 when it really started catching speed.

theres for sure a connection with pierre and both subgenres even new jazz and its subliminal but its real.

  • Jun 28, 2025

nobody made this connection because nobody paid attention.

Nintendo music strength doesn’t rely on loops so they probably not calling

Tyler or Ye or Pharrell woulda got hit up first in hiphop, especially Ye

I mean, Pierre did go to production school and started off his career as an engineer. He has a grasp and understanding of music theory lmao

I mean, Charli XCX just won a Grammy largely because of AG Cook and company so…

I think it’s disingenuous to say hyper pop hasn’t taken off. I think it may be more fair to say that it’s plateau though.

Niggas throw around music theory as if just knowing what key you're in and knowing some chord progressions automatically makes you qualified to take on any genre lol. It requires way more than that which is why they hire composers for those soundtracks.

  • Jun 28, 2025

Best modern day rap producer by far.

Malcom, you don’t have to try to dunk on me. I completely understood your premise lmao. I’m just saying we don’t have to downplay the possibility of composing given his background lmao. I would actually argue that he’s shown moments where he would be capable to do so.

Anyway here’s one of my favorite channels related to video games scores/soundtracks.

ngl i dont think that wouldve happen regardless lol i cant think of an instance where nintendo has worked with a western artist for music as of late

i think he wouldve had better luck with a different company like iirc knxwledge did some songs for the capcom fighting game collections and SF6

  • Jun 28, 2025

Most established artists who are contracted to make music for games are paid up front and don’t get residuals. He could have gotten into the gaming scene if he wanted to but for a producer his size it probably wasn’t worth it to stop selling beats just to, say, make a soundtrack for an indie platformer or something.

Just because you can make more than a 4 bar melody doesn't mean you can compose lol. I'm downplaying his ability because that skill requires years of study and training to be able to be proficient at lol. Why do you think they hire niggas who went to school for music to compose for movies and games over niggas who make fire beats on FL studio lol. There's levels to this.
