I know people can justify this opinion in terms of rapping and lyricism but the hooks and production are better on most Kendrick albums than they are on T&Y. As a songwriter, I really think Kendrick is better and has been for a long time.
And let me be clear, Lupe is in my top 10 and I think very highly of T&Y.
Kendrick knows how to make “post-modern, semi-popular” pop music better than Lupe which is why he has a bigger fanbase
Top 10 Kendrick songs imo
1. DNA
2. How Much a Dollar Cost
3. Money Trees
4. Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst
5. PRIDE
6. These Walls
7. Father Time
8. United in Grief
9. DUCKWORTH
10. The Blacker the Berry

what does post modern music even mean
Kendrick is the shy introverted but talented everyman. at least that's how i perceive his image. he is true talent. authentic and all.
Lupe is talented but snobbish and up his own arse and overestimates his talent. that's the image i perceive.
people subconciously or conciously hate capitalistic values (Lupe is more of a representative here in his attitude) so it's easier to buy into the capitalist fairy tale of the hard working everyman. the authentic grandeur. it's false tho bla bla i'm tired.
Give Up The Ghost secretly one of the most beautiful ballads Radiohead have ever written.

It’s a theory from Christgau
“Not that the related ideals of broad-based appeal and stardom and eclecticism have been abandoned. On the contrary, the last two years have seen the development of a new phenomenon, which I call semipopular music. Semipopular music is music that is appreciated--I use the term advisedly--for having all the earmarks of popular music except one: popularity. Just as semiclassical music is a systematic dilution of highbrow preferences, semipopular music is a cross-bred concentration of fashionable modes.”

Lupe thinks he’s above making pop music. Which he’s entitled to. But music fans are also entitled to picking the guy who does over the guy who doesn’t.

Production on T&Y is on par/better than TPAB and even though I like gkmc that album doesnt really do anything that crazy production wise beyond some well done sampling
T&Y production blew me away
Haven't anything like that since Deltron 3030

Christgau got a few interesting observations. I’m not a stan but I will acknowledge them.

Sheffield writing that "u2 would have sold crack to nuns to make The Bends at that time" in a published Rolling Stone article made me a stan
