The thread vibes always change when season 3 debates start up

I only brought it up last week because I thought it was funny how protective Van was over Lottie in last weeks episode compared to her forgetting about her whole existence in S3

they’re not great parents though. Earn only sees Lottie a handful of times a year and seemed quite comfortable continuing that pattern if he went to LA without her and Van. Van left Lottie behind to pursue a fantasy life in Europe.

it’s very telling to me Lottie seemed to want to be with her grandparents instead, probably bc the grandparents are the ones who consistently take care of her

It was Lottie’s birthday and Earn took her on a camping trip that she didn’t even seem all that excited about. It seemed like Earn and Van used the camping trip as a way to reconnect with each other instead of celebrating their daughter on her born day. Look at the way they kept sending her off to distract herself

As Earn said, Lottie is truly the embodiment of Earn and Van’s best qualities. However, we can also see how their worst qualities have affected her. Her moodiness and lack of enthusiasm about her birthday and the camping trip as a whole stood out to me. Same thing with the desire to be with the grandparents, who provide a sense of stability that Earn and Van have never given her. Lottie’s disconnection here is the result of her parents’ disconnection with each other and with themselves as individuals

I’m still not really sold on Earn and Van’s love for each other tbh (too much telling, not enough showing) but their getting back together and the ending with Lottie’s adorable smile actually gave me a really hopeful feeling. Like despite their failures as partners and parents, they will get it together eventually and be the family they want to be

All in all, a beautiful but flawed episode. I really don’t want this show to end

    Wow. Well said.

There’s a deeper story they were trying to emphasize on with this episode. The black family dynamic and how to rebuild that, getting through all the pride and ego which is why they played that Sade song Love Stronger Than Pride.

I think it was a great message and not something you depicted in black media like at all

Oh the message was great. Don't get me wrong, it's still a fantastic episode. Just not one of my favorites

I also love how it was shot in 4:3, setting the tone for the intimate feeling

also, the little girl playing Lottie is one of the best castings for a child ever. she looks like the female version of Donald with Zazie mixed in. it’s crazy

What really makes this episode for be is how f***ing foreboding it is. From the uneasiness of the white dude who runs the ground, the haunting sound design of the cicadas, the constant shots of Lottie alone in dangerous situations (by the creek, in an abandoned building, with a dangerous mythical beast).

The whole episode you're just waiting for everything to be undercut by tradegy or at least surrealist abstraction. Even after the moment in the tent where they commit to each through tears, once it starts raining and they leave quickly my brain thought back to Earn driving fast on the road at the beginning. And I'm like "fuck they're gonna get into a car accident". Literally held my breath for the whole episode.....and then Sade plays again ("Love is Stronger than Pride") and Lottie smiles...... gotdamn it's a masterpiece.

this. i was kind of mindblown by the ending bc i was seriously expecting something to go wrong while they were in the rain but it didn’t. this is probably the most subversive episode of the entire series

It's not because there is no other show like this that it's on Sopranos level tho

But maybe it's not for me idk... last seasons felt like Gambino wanted to prove what he can achieve as a showrunner more than anything imo

my first and only fan theory about this episode, idc if it's been posted yet.

when lottie blew out that candle, she wished for them to be together/an actual family. That little smirk at the end confirmed it for me. Of course it went unsaid or else it wouldn't have came true, and Atlanta is THAT surreal to where something like that could happen.

I'm a little worried bc I saw someone say that Earn will die bc of his heartfelt confession to make it tragic - and I am honestly not okay with that
