Make it a section for reviewing whatever. Films, albums, tv, books, restaurants, recipes you find.

    my comments on this

    • is music journalism cooked? i can tell since i first started doing it and since even before that when i was consuming music journalism* i can tell you theres hardly been times when it wasnt cooked. rolling stone was getting s*** on for paid reviews and integrity way back in the 70s by lester bangs and folks at creem who all lived on their office floor. when we were doing this in the late 10s it quicky became apparent that people dont read on the internet. people buy books to read if you think about it. one cound argue theyve never read because there is a lot more to a publication than just words on screen/paper. your brain makes neural connections far quicker than it processes words. which is why tons of people go straight to video and audio content, and which is why although i loved writing i realized i enjoyed talking on the microphone the most. ultimately its about what you wanna do and whether you wanna do vertical vids or write words or do a podcast and what your end goal is. most likely none of these will generate income in the longer term

    • 'good pitchfork'. i think pitchfork was never 'good' or 'snappy' and people actively do not know about it and never read their s*** in any depth and those who did are probably too busy with their grandchildren to comment on it. whatever two viral reviews that people always point to are just two reviews, whatever story about the guy whos concerts started flopping over one review is not a symptom of anything. by and large the writing was HORRIBLE and not exciting at all over there for years. if anything it got much much better in the latter half of the 10s when they actually started caring about who writes what for them. most classic reviews on pitchfork are at least great. as i said theres more to a publication that just words on screen, which is why it got where it got. not a single publication gets where it gets because they utilize better words i can tell you that much. nyt is not a conglomerate because they write better words

    • i think the worst type of content by and large is breaking news or any sort of news writing. its an absolute drivel and it is extremely not fun. funny enough its the closest to classic journalism ie reporting all of these vertical content creators get in their work, not even research gets them there. news is (always been?) entertainment, and if you want journalism i suggest you start reading books. and on that front music journalism is absolutely thriving. its been some incredible recent music books that ive seen, everybody wants to get in on something and multiple people by now have finished their long-term research projects even into something recent like indie music in the 00s. so yeah all in all music entertainment is here to stay and music journalism is doing aight

*i was involved in writing about music for some time: since around 2017 until at least 2022. i was writing music reviews, big writeups, news, playlists, did a podcast, tried out video formats of all kinds. this is the perspective i bring into these comments

thinking that music journalism is in any way worse off than any other criticism is kinda sad because its so bogged down by the ruling ideology. but i get it

Yea I guess I'm not trying to say it's worse off than any other kind of criticism. Just looking at it from a music angle because I'm in it / consume it. But yea it's a dark time for any type of criticism. Looking back decades/centuries ago when popular writers would write critiques of others' works is something I'm a bit envious of. Imagine if artists were doing in-depth reviews of other artists' works? Could be pretty cool

  • ngl i dont really vibe with these short form videos.

i still enjoy reading articles u feel me.
