What was the last major hip-hop album release to have an extensive rollout?

Clipse had one but idk if we’d consider that major in a commercial sense

Glorilla had a pretty long and big rollout, she was The Shop, Complex, Club Shay Shay, and had her 3 big singles

what are the platforms for a traditional rollout today? from my view, plenty artists been doing this and it’s still not helping lol

Clipse had nostalgia and Pharrell boosting them

Clipse did a round of interviews in print media, video podcast interviews, a couple music video singles, performances on NPR Tiny Desk and Colors. It was all very coordinated and happened in quick succession.

They had narratives. Malice's return, Clipse's return, Pusha's feelings on the industry as a whole. It was a record about something and they did the work of getting people invested in that.

but many artists have done that also like JID, Glorilla, Tyler was my point so I was tryna figure out what exactly are the major platforms we consider today

i’d like to hear a diss from Kendrick that isnt so much of an easy target

like Drake made sense but he’s so easy to diss, we have so much material to choose from with him

i think he wont respond to just anyone (which i kinda hate) but i’d like to see how he’d do with a challenge

Always thought a good rebuttal to Cole trying to downplay his discography would be to bring up the fact that Cole copied him twice

@sab please send all future mal/rory insider info threads to the netherrealm if this is false, there’s gotta be consequences to this bs

this is gonna be so funny if he just keeps pushing the date back til it coincides with a big enough artist’s album

J Cole probably don't want to go do an interview circuit cause everyone would be asking him about the beef.

The beef put all 3 of them in weird positions for interviews

Cause I know none of them wanna talk about it but it’s what everyone wants to ask them

Yep, he definitely wouldn't surprise drop the fall off after the extended rollout he's been doing for it

Exactly they want to talk about their albums and their process but no one cares about that they want to talk about everything but the music.

Still wonder what that project even supposed to be so I’m curious

I dont keep up with Jcole as much but Drake has kinda been out on standard promotional interviews for awhile

  • I think it would be weird strategy to drop as a total surprise

Drop a trailer/ music vid with the release date in a few days is much better than just a pure surprise drop imo

None of them do interviews very often but the beef definitely changed it to ever

Unless it’s a curated one, Which I usually hate

    when did he do that?

GKMC achieved everything he wanted to achieve with an album so he made his whole next album (FHD) stories from his childhood just like it

Then Kendrick threw a curveball and made TPAB, A very personal album that had heavy Jazz, Soul and Funk elements. Which Cole then did with 4YEO, only twist is it wasn’t totally his perspective

I’m not saying he copied Kendrick on some Logic s*** but he copied the whole album ideas

It's not the platform. It's what you do with the platform.

Tyler always comes with a whole new look. He's a producer too so there's a specific soundscape he's working in. He did the Pop Out and then remixed That Guy and kind of put his foot down as a top dog of his generation. His proximity to Kendrick and Clipse gave that legitimacy. The album was black dance music. There's a lot to chew on there.

What was the JID rollout? I'm really not sure. Besides being a long awaited follow up to something people already liked. And that's kind of how it was treated.

I know that was always his plan but tbh he's hyped the fall off up so much in the last few years I think at this point people just want to hear that and nothing else

Maybe. He said something about 2 classics so if it's one of them then yeah he should drop it. If it's not then keep it and just drop TFO
