Basically all of our precise technology relies on rare earth metals, a majority of which are Chinese-mined

These laws impose a strict control on what can be exported and the process of choosing what is exported, including outright bans on military applications of these materials

Want to mine elsewhere? Too bad! Machinery is subject to these controls too

This puts China in firm control of the raw materials that industries like Electric Vehicles, AI, computing, precise manufacturing (chips, medical equipment) all rely on

Actually most of these rare earths are mined all across the world, China just has 90% of all the refinery capacity of the world. This is mainly because the CCP had gave huge subsidies to put all the other refineries in the world out of business to the point where rare earths mined in the US were being sent to China to get refined. This gonna be a short term blow for the US but long term a lot of strategic refineries will be set up in the US and other western countries, the costs will just be much higher, but knowing the US spending habits regarding military I don’t think they care much tbh.

Honestly don’t know why China does it now instead of waiting for a more strategic time tbh, but they probably got some reason for it

The US simply does not possess the long term economic capabilities to either plan this out or take the required long term investment risks on this. The entire economy is reliant on fiscal quarter reports

    The US would have to

    A) commit long term to rebuilding its industrial capacity after 30+ years of de-industrialization without subsidies laying to waste in the financial sector

    B) raise wages enough to make mining at home competitive enough to have a large enough workforce compete with refineries in the global south

We can look at all the micro chip facilities Microsoft, Intel, and co. have “committed” to build to see how well any of this holds up long term

Idk china is not one to back down. Tesla may have to raise prices on cars to counter the rising cost of their batteries.

I’m not a big Tesla stock guy just thinking out loud

This would be bad news for the US in the short term
