I love his work around st of course, was early af on him cause 4chan, but I'll take pop/alt rnb Blake everyday of the week

FTBYH felt like a step-up from AF to me.
It features his most beautifully-written songs to date (Say What You Will, Lost Angel Nights, title track) and also songs achieving the right balance between James’ idiosyncrasies and a pop songwriting structure (Famous Last Words, Life Is Not the Same).
There are a couple of misses on the album still though (something that’s been plaguing his albums since Overgrown).
But yeah I’m a bit shocked that as someone who was very fond of AF, FTBYH missed the mark for you

It's not the worst album ever I just found it way too boring and middling. I still listen as an avid james fan tho

But this was just having loads of fun with modular synths and drum machines and whatever and just going for it.

Don’t get me wrong; Og is still a decent project, but weak songs such as I Am Sold and Voyeur weigh it down so much. Considering the bonus track (Every Day I Ran) as an actual part of the album helped salvage it, just as Mulholland did for AF.

Damn I Am Sold and Voyeur are some of my favorite songs from him it's always been funny to me how people look for very different things in James Blakes music
