Honestly the only thing i can think of is it's just one more way to either keep people on the app by baiting them to click on the pic of someone they know, and/or it's used as bait for new users (or bringing back old users) who will see their friends on the app and feel the need to create an account themselves (data marketplace strats).

Of course the longer someone stays on the app, even if it's just a couple seconds longer, thats another couple seconds they might encounter an ad.
