"Most folks would’ve gone fisticuffs ON SIGHT!!!! D did get heated — but in the nerdiest, most D’Angelo way possible.
“Man,” he said, “you so phony! Chords suck. You don’t know how to stack vocals!!!!! Your vibrato is ass! Lyrics whack! BRING IT! I will battle you ANY STAGE ANY TIME, n***a!”"

You know it still doesn’t feel real that D has passed away. It’s really surreal this tbh. I remember when I first discovered D’Angelo and I was in my late teens (I think 19) and it was like the mid 2000’s or just a little later. Rolling stone had a ‘500 greatest albums of all time’ and I was literally going through a lot of those albums and see if I found a new gem in the process
Then I see ‘voodoo’ without no prior knowledge of his music or anything whatsoever. And it was just like nothing I’ve ever heard in my life. Pure music, artistry, just a feeling of this what music should or can be when you have a real artist crafting there work to create something so incredible.
Ever since then I just loved ‘Voodoo’ easily my top 3 albums of all time. Clearly his influencers over the years in songwriting and how he creates the music was influenced by the likes of Marvin Gaye, Prince, James Brown among others. But D he was in his own lane. Very difficult to compare him to anyone one else, because there wasn’t any artist doing what he was doing let alone in genre of R&B and soul music or music in general.
Over the years being on KTT and KTT2 i made a D’Angelo thread on the og KTT and it was really nice to discover there was people here who appreciated and loved his music like I do. And my god what a joy it was when he did finally release ‘black messiah’ after all those years. I’ll never forget those moments.
And that’s what I take from his music, I’ve had moments where I’ve poured my heart out to songs like ‘the root’ just completely lost in the music. I’ve had moments of happiness, sadness and pure euphoria listening to his music in this lifetime.
I am forever grateful I got the privilege to see him live in 2015 at the Hammersmith in London. The best musician I’ve ever seen live! For me his music went beyond fandom and standom, he was a true artist in the literal sense. You rarely get an artist like that in this lifetime.
D’Angelo may your music live forever, it will always hold a special place in my heart. RIP Thank you 🤍

On some level it feels kinda wrong that we can see his funeral booklet because someone posted it online but it's still great to see that he had an amazing send off
Kim Burrell, Stevie Wonder, Soultronics & Vanguard & Kendra Foster took care of the music/doing musical tributes throughout
Stevie did If It's Magic & As
Stevie performing If It's Magic and As is as good as it gets.
Where are yall seeing this? 😢

from an old rolling stone interview
"Questlove says. “There was a comfort in knowing you go to the studio and walk into a whole new world. The engineers come in and talk about what Foxy did this week or how someone wrote graffiti on the bathroom. Or me and Rahzel would call D pretending to be Chico DeBarge talkin’ s*** — it was like school. That’s why it took four years. There was no loose women — I wish. No orgies, no d*** madness, no trouble with the law. I mean, he got into a scuffle with somebody, but that didn’t hold things up.”"

So curious about the material he debuted at the Hollywood bowl in 2022 opening for Dave Chappelle
In the wake of D's passing, when thinking about the remaining landmark keepers of the Soul & Funk Traditions, I thought of Sa-Ra, namely Shafiq Husayn - the most musically active member of the legendary Creative Partners. I didn't think to go to his social media handles till now, and wow. I didn't know they knew each other & conversed about matters that were the thing of dreams to an enthusiast & aspiring keeper of the flame like me. Two pillars, both my Yodas 🙏🏾🤲🏾....
This nigga D was a moor yo!!
this may explain why he named his second son Morocco
Toni (his long-time ex gf & BM) also said he was a big conspiracy theorist...
lemme find out this nigga was the R&B Jay Elec (with a way stronger track record) the whole time???

Brother @sharifbey re-introduced us and you called me the Zappa of music and I called you the Jesus of Soul and R&B.
Our first meeting was in 1997 in Studio A at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan 🍎and @ommaskeith and I were working in Studio B.
You had @questlove and @leonwaremusic in the control room and the live room was like a museum of every keyboard 🎹 and other musical instruments you could think of. Yall pushed play and i was blown away!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
I didn't know at that time it was the Voodoo album y'all were working on. 🤯🤯We both loved Sly Stone Junie Morrison, Prince and George Clinton
You wanted to know how Sa-Ra Creative Partners remade “Just Like A Baby” by Sly.

We always talked about working together but it never happened. (

I send my deepest condolences to the Archer Family and fellow loved ones and fans all over the world.
We just lost a REAL ONE. 😢😢💔💔💔 Heartbroken
Your name and musical genius will live on in all of our hearts and minds forever!!
Until we funk around again, my friend.
RIP Bro. Archer El.💜💜🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🛸👽👽🕊🕊🕊I remember your manager Dom (RIP🤘🏿💜😢) picking me up late night around 2012 ish or 2013 and he played this song

and Another Life and I lost it!! 🤯🤯
then he called you and we had the dopest conversation about “Black Music and what is called FUNK” and how we both hated the term “NEO SOUL”🤣🤣🤣🤣
And we had the masterplan to out Funk the whole planet til its Done!!!
We were trying to figure how do we get Sly Stone, @bilalmusic @saracreativepartners @thundercat @erykahbadu in the studio at this time.
Talk about not fair🤷🏿♂️🔥🔥I also told you about the next genius that was coming who was @anderson._paak and played “HOURS AWAY” then you lost it🤯
Then you and Dom stamped that too.🤘🏿💜💜👽🛸i’m just having random thoughts and memories about you Brother D. Miss you D. Damn!!!!💔😢
It feels just like when Minnie, Marvin, J Dilla, Michael Jackson, and James Brown passed away.More random D’Angelo thoughts…
D’Angelo was a member of the Moorish Science Temple of America. In fact, as I stated in an earlier post, my brother, @sharifbey, reintroduced us, which I meant. I had already met him in '97, but @themarkjenkins and Sharif were his personal trainers and Grand Sheik, too, around 2013, right before and during the Black Messiah release. Shareef says “I’m training D’Angelo and he’s a fan of yours” He’s a member of my Temple, Bro. M. Archer El. “
Talk about another mind-blowing moment! 😂😫
Then he put d’Angelo on the phone, “Islam!!” I give him my Islam!! and we started talking as if we knew each other for eons😂😂😂Our discussions were more than music. This Brother was very, very heavy into politics and the higher stages of consciousness. What we call heaven.
We talked about how as musicians and artists, we are channeling higher types of energy that cannot be seen with the naked eye. It is only manifested through all works here on the planet. And how certain chord progressions invoke a certain type of emotion. This is how you know music comes from the throne., but when manipulated in the wrong way, it can cause a fall in man.
We talked about how we have to be responsible with playing with those types of frequencies because we will be held accountable and how we use them.Thank you, brother D’Angelo, for the heavy conversations about music in life and how the universe works.
Don’t cry y’all, he’s still here. 🛸
Go listen to all of his music and listen to his voice and his thoughts he is still here. Forever.#D’Angelo🤘🏿💜👽🛸

I understand that R&B/Gospel looks at Kim Burrell the way a lot of rappers look at Ian Connor (aka a truly evil person that honestly shouldnt really be around a lot of these niggas but i understand, cause of her legacy but good god she is legit just a vile human being who is the poster child of why the church has been losing a lot of their youth outreach.)
But this still hurts.

Devil’s Pie last verse is literally 5 Percenter philosophy.
Not that surprising. But this a heartfelt tribute (even if I never personally saw it for Sa-Ra like THAT, they f***ing laced Badu with the purest crack cocaine on New Amerykah)
So curious about the material he debuted at the Hollywood bowl in 2022 opening for Dave Chappelle
the set was only 25 mins, featuring a combined lineup from his two previous bands. the most interesting aspect of it was his inclusion of an unreleased q-tip collab from the hiatus era...
A pic from his final show by @iamsquint in IG

I'm aware. You never saw it for Sa-Ra like that? and yeah they're part of why NA is my favorite Erykah album. They just dropped a new track on the excellent Soul In The Horn compilation btw:
