The Revenant?
I’ve never met a Revenant stan before in my life
I'm am lowkey one but biased cause it was shot in the bush where I live
Some really funny directors lists lmaoo enjoy scrolling through that account
Ti west getting cooked for going too “basic”, George miller’s list, and S.S. Rajamouli being the only one that understood the assignment
Ti West probably looked it up on Google
I prefer the old masters, by which I mean John Ford, John Ford and John Ford…

But the greatest comedy ever made, the greatest Civil War film ever made, and perhaps the greatest film ever made was by one Joseph Frank “Buster” Keaton

Lmaoo y’all sure do love y’all pre-2000s movies
I looooove 2000s movies cause they have the power to reflect our now and our future
I’ll admit, there’s some pre-60s movies that are hard for me to get into, especially if the way people act and speak feels more expository and stagey. They’re not all like that tho.
real mon for Roy Andersson

3 Citizen Kane (1941)

Their #1 choice is surprising, but I’m happy to see!
Thoughts?
I think this very brief article is also worth a read: https://www.anothergaze.com/elena-gorfinkel-manifesto-against-lists/
And Laura Mulvey on their new #1: https://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/features/greatest-film-all-time-jeanne-dielman-23-quai-du-commerce-1080-bruxelles
I’ve seen 95 now, after getting around to Shoah.
Final 4 (because I’m unfortunately not sure when I’ll ever see histories du cinema):
Madame de… / Imitation of Life / Journey to Italy / The Piano
thought this was 100 greatest films OF 2022. was shook that you'd seen 90%
Ngl, going through some of the directors ballots, I thought I’d see a lot more love for The Master. Looks like that will take a little longer than expected before people catch on that its actually top 10 of all time
I've seen a lot of these already but Ima do a deep rewatch here soon (probably with the criterion challenge)...Idk I just never got the hype for films like Citizen kane and 2001. 2001 is definitely a gorgeous film when it gets to the space segment and I did enjoy it, but it's not even my favorite Kubrick film...Im a wayyyyy bigger fan of Dr. Strangelove.
(Please note that I'm not saying those are bad films, I'm saying I never got the hype in regards to them being praised as top 5 films of all time)
Also don't get me started on s*** like "stalker"
Even though a lot of folks on here have shared the same opinion about stalker being a bore, I still can't understand how it's so hyped up by "cinephiles" and makes a top 100 list of all time movies.
I think I'm one of the most well-rounded users on here when it comes to film, meaning I enjoy the "pretentious" criterion s*** and even have a decent collection of films, I enjoy dumbass blockbusters like MCU, and I enjoy the "typical" top 10 classics like Goodfellas and Pulp fiction. So let me say theres no universe where a movie like beau travail, stalker or persona is being placed higher than Goodfellas and Pulp fiction in my personal top 10. And I f***in loved beau and persona, but not more than Pulp and good.
Also the fact that Bicycle thieves and do the right thing isn't top 5 is crazy to me as well.
Bicycle Thieves ain't even De Sica's best though
Bicycle Thieves ain't even De Sica's best though
No such thing when it comes to art
Bicycle Thieves ain't even De Sica's best though
not even the best out of italian neo-realism either for that matter
I think my most cancelleable take in all of media is that I'd probably have Intolerance on my list
Griffith was a hideous racist and The Birth of a Nation is unforgivable, anyone who tells you otherwise is lying and often racist themselves, but Intolerance is an absolutely astounding masterpiece, it operates on a scale both physical and temporal that nobody would attempt today, and all in the service of a simple, universal message, it's a gigantic art film that could have only been made in cinema's infancy, and its unprecedented cross-timeline editing was also the specific inspiration for Soviet montage theory
Again though, gotta reiterate, Griffith was a horrifying man who single-handedly made the Ku Klux Klan cool again in America, leading to a wave of Klan-themed parties and interest in the group, and was indirectly responsible for who knows how many recruitments into its second wave with how effectively his film worked as pro-Klan propaganda, I am in no way endorsing any of that, The Birth of a Nation should never have been made and Intolerance doesn't absolve him of the incalculable real-world harm that his previous film caused
Need to get around to rewatch Goodbye, Dragon Inn even that should made the list. Part cinema homage and part gay cruising story. In fact Tsai voted in 2012.
I don't like it personally but you'll be pleased to know he did it again this year

@HeyFella and you thought I was bad
Ngl, going through some of the directors ballots, I thought I’d see a lot more love for The Master. Looks like that will take a little longer than expected before people catch on that its actually top 10 of all time
They heard you the first time
let's not do that thing where we push a movie so hard as the ultimate opus that everyone else gets sick of hearing about it
I don't like it personally but you'll be pleased to know he did it again this year
Tsai himself and Joe already put it in. I’m aware as I’m scrolling through Josh Lewis’ tweets.
