I’ve settled that if I voted my list would look something like this

The Passion of Joan of Arc (Dreyer)
    City Lights (Chaplin)
    Bringing Up Baby (Hawks)
    It’s a Wonderful Life (Capra)
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (Jireš)
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Hooper)
    Barry Lyndon (Kubrick)
    The Sacrifice (Tarkovsky)
    A.I. Artificial Intelligence (Spielberg)
    The New World (Malick)

I wish something like this would get submitted

I think certain people would like it more if it was a critical and commercial failure. It’s not simply contrarianism that highlights the mentality of a lot of modern chronically online film critics and consumers, but a need to elevate under appreciated works and be more harsh towards what they perceive as unearned acclaim. If you could peer into an alternate universe where certain films failed where others succeeded, you’d be guaranteed to see a lot of hypocrisy. Actually yeah I guess it is just contrarianism, but I think the psychological aspect is a bit more sincere than that.

A movie like Citizen Kane is essentially about a similar kind of thing and its far better so no lol

I mean s*** I just saw The Apartment which is just as much a dunk on capitalism and its a far more cleverly written film

Parasite is just a very tame Korean movie and on Bong's ideas

Citizen Kane A lot of y’all think oldies/black-n-white = great

honestly comparing the movies from the 40s to 60s just makes this era look so f***in pathetic lmao

The pretentiousness continues. Where did the weird trend of “hate everything current, love everything old” come from?

Citizen Kane A lot of y’all think oldies/black-n-white = great

It’s not just that they’re oldies/black & white, but because it’s a list about the greatest films ever—which usually older films have had more time to let their influence on the medium be felt. I think it’s insane to put anything on the list from the last decade because they certainly haven’t been felt other than through immediate imitation or discussion. I like Parasite a lot, it’s just not as good as plenty of older films they left off and maybe if we’re still discussing it in over 10 years then it’ll be more warranted. I think Get Out and Portrait of a Lady on Fire getting in over anything by Terrence Malick or much older filmmakers like Howard Hawks is just embarrassing. Honestly Tarantino is way more deserving with Pulp Fiction than any of those recent films.

Feel like outside of the Safdies, I’m mostly anticipating what filmmakers that have been around for atleast 2 decades or more are doing

I enjoy movies that still come out. I just see it as content nowadays. It’s not cinema anymore. Plus some actual talented old filmmakers are still active like Cameron or Scorsese or Mann so I’ll check them out. The new generation only knows how to make homages or watchable content at best though

Kino section probably won’t agree with me and the smug a******’s on film twitter certainty won’t, but I’m really impressed by Ti West. Yeah he’s just doing genre pastiche, but he does it sincerely and with a genuine knowledge of the material he’s riffing on. Again the culture is at a point of regurgitation, but it’s more refreshing to me than self important films that fail to communicate anything nuanced or the ironic detached works that act above what they’re playing around with. He’s making horror movies that are genuinely uncomfortable, sexy, scary, but also fun without losing their edge. That’s so rare now.

We wasn’t talking about the list specifically and I never mentioned parasite making the list. I’m strictly talking about parasite getting hate rn and boy saying citizen Kane is better.

Like it or not some niggas on here do have a natural bias towards older “criterion” content, not everyone but some do. And alotta ppl can’t think for themselves and because majority of others calls something a masterpiece they force themselves to believe the same thing.

There’s definitely people I know who really like him. Personally, I didn’t like X at all though. It felt like any other template slasher horror movie but pseudo artsy. Give me the trashy 2000s horror slashers like House of Wax or Hills Have Eyes anyday over it

This is just dumb because if we couldn’t think for ourselves, wouldn’t we be gassing up Parasite just as much with all the love it’s gotten from audiences, critics and film historians?

He may or he may not. I just make that assumption when the guy is basically saying he hates modern movies. I honestly believe you have to have terrible taste if you can’t find any amazing films in todays day. The problem is ppl think modern films is only “MCU and Jordan Peele” when there’s a lot of indie filmmakers making amazing stuff.

I really don’t see this at all. X is much closer to those mean spirited 2000’s horror films you’re referring to than anything released in the last decade outside of what Zombie put out. I don’t think it’s any artsier than Carrie. I think you’re maybe projecting the A24 sensibilities onto it. The fact that it’s a slasher playing things straight but meticulously crafted is what makes it refreshing.
