Was that film not appreciated? I feel like that's one of the most revered films ever

Just looked it up and you’re right looks like it was widely acclaimed and received nominations

I only rate like 1% of the films I log on LB. And trying to eventually stop rating films altogether.

I watched The Ascent last night and now I’m thinking how Soviet Union really got the war movies on lock… also I’ve got serious 70s bias already and it just added another one to my personal registry. I wish I had more balanced appreciation across the decades but the 70s truly got this strong synthesis of classical values applied w contemporary sensibilities. Sometimes I get burnt out out on war films but this one was something else… reminded me of Bela Tarr/Weerasethakul’s sorta ambient audio-visual tone if it was applied to a more directly legible narrative. As for the acting, they really brought me into the space of being a human in occupied land, where anyone around you will switch sides to stay alive… this is an unexpectedly strong precursor for my Shoah watch!

You weren't really going to get a budget for your film over there unless it was propeganda so they got really good at subversive war films

Also speaking of Korean directors, Kogonada has one of the coolest names to me.

I need to revisit Columbus before speaking on it, I don’t think I paid attention enough on first watch. But I did enjoy After Yang a lot

I was reading a while ago and saying this is the battle of pretentiousness as if some Star Wars vs. Star Trek battle over the convention floor. Like nah it's really edgelords recruiting new members to the cult. That bit of negative side of me is just how Licorice Pizza thread went. It's that we lost a valuable member of my section.

this is a really good video essay by Kogonada about After Life. His video essays are actually how I first discovered Kogonada who I think put After Life in his top 10
