Bro, you from UK right? This might sound stupid but i wonder if growing up in the UK has some effect on this. I say it's sounds stupid because i understand both bands are english lol but i feel like The Smiths are a little more on the depressing side, and I've seen a lot of friends actually relate more to their music just because of how gloomy/depressing it can be out there i guess. It's not like The Cure ain't got depressing moody ass s*** either, but every time i hear "And if a double-decker bus..." i'm just like man this s*** is wild haha. NOT saying that it's like that for everybody, because i actually like that gloomyness, but yeah

listened to the smiths more than anyone and i've only ever laughed

there's a bit about how being northern and growing up poor round manchester factories produced the cynicism of the fall, joy division, and the smiths but it's overstated cause you've got bands in the same position with opposite auras like Oasis
the double decker bus line also makes me laugh. morrissey himself didn't take it seriously and would've scrapped the song if marr didn't tell him to keep it

the cure are far more devastating and heart-on-the-sleeve. Robert is also far more mature.
think the reason i love the smiths where others don't is cause i get the humor. you've got to be a childish nerd to love all that

Ah, see now this makes more sense. Listening to There Is a Light That Never Goes Out always cracked me up, but it's one of those songs where if played around other people, they're just like wtf this is depressing as f*** lmao. So you're right about understanding the humor behind it. In that case, yes, The Cure is way more devastating hahah

i get what you mean. americans don't prefer that kind of wit usually

on closer introspection the only thing the cure has over then is that their music sounds slightly more modern

But johnny marr and morrisey were jus an unmatched duo, i think their music is overall just better

iggy mentioned how he prefers new york and likes sonic youth so he would've known about the crazy local band they toured and collabed with.

interview was the year Children of God released too, so great timing. iggy has always been 'on it'--his track record for loving bands before they blow is probably the best all-time.

    This is amazing

The smiths got way more 10/10 songs in a much smaller run of releases

The cure’s discography is full of filler and misses

  • Oct 15, 2020

Cant believe i never saw this thread.

The Cure for sure. Wider spectrum of emotions and styles.

Virgin Morrissey vs Chad Robert Smith

this made me lol cuz Morrissey used to claim to be asexual while Robert was fallin' in love all over the place.

A timeless debate (hence the “Let’s be civil” because we all know how this debate tends to go).

Personally, The Smiths. Morrissey’ a lyricism, wit and ability to create complex vignettes coupled with Johnny Marr’s melodic jangle-pop guitar... they were IMO the closest thing to the next Lennon/McCartney.

There were a few choice mistakes (such as not going with the takes from the John Peele sessions for their debut aka why Hatful of Hollow is better than their ST album) and letting Meat is Murder be the focus of the their second album of the same name..

Plus, there is the mystique because afawk the Smiths will never reunite... idk that’s just me.

Just Like Heaven will always be one of my favorite songs so
