Music is an artform. There is no debating that. It’s a form of human expression, human emotion, & human creativity

Music predates the concept of “art forms” though

Music was originally used for communication

You lying to yourself and in denial about the modern world if you think a release on Spotify is closer to Van Gogh than a bag of chips bro. It’s consumer product. Again we are in the damn SALES THREAD.

200 is ridiculous but 25-30 really isn’t. As long as it’s quality it usually just extends the time getting to know an album, aka adds depth, which is value. And again, no one is engaging with albums as something to listen to in one sitting as one statement. Do you not realize that’s just not how people engage with music anymore? We are the only ones left doing that

Also viewing music as art is played out. Music is music. F*** the Beatles for making everyone view music as art

Yes it was The Beatles who first mafde people think of music as art

Not the classical or the romantic or the jazz or the blues artists

Do you think “art” only refers to paintings?

    I mean pop music specifically

Blues singers and players definitely weren’t looking at is art, it was critics rediscovering it imo. I believe that is way deeper and less pretentious than the “art” framing, so weird to bring them up here imo

Yes romantics did and I disagree with their philosophy

I don’t really think jazz musicians really viewed it through those lens either, they were just cats who played, not artists, if you listen to their lingo and attitude

It was Sgt Pepper that set the annoying standard that for music to have value it has to craft itself in this “high art” lens and take itself super seriously

But yall just wouldn’t get this conversation tbh it’s too deep

No of course not, again I’m using an example for a point of comparison and you are clinging to the specifics of that example rather than engaging with the actual point lol it shows that you’re not confident in the argument and need to move it around

If you know what the phrase “art form” means, then you would know you sound absolutely crazy saying that music is not an art

I care about music so much that I don’t believe it has to be “art” to be great. I don’t have that need to hear Lead Belly and say “oh wow this is quite high art”. No it’s deeper than art.

All music is art. Why are you assuming that “art” has to mean “high brow”?

Again music predates the whole concept of art forms. And you can call a lot of things an art form: to go back to the food example that you hate so much, crafting food is also an art form. But that doesn’t mean that we have to boil the whole thing down to just “art”. Music is so much more than an artistic pursuit

A big part of art is constraint. Knowing what needs to be included and knowing what needs to be cut. The reason albums aren’t 200-songs long is because that’s a ridiculous number of songs to try to ask someone to listen to and engage with in one sitting as one statement

all i’m getting from this is you don’t think your favorite artists are good enough to put out more than 8 songs per year without half of them being garbage

You’re a Thug stan so you just want 800 songs per album from your favorite artist because he forgot how to make an interesting project over a decade ago
