someone finally uploaded original demo of pacific sunset on yt

I think Billy Cobb did a very good job with his version of it.

I also like this short mix with the added drums, wish it was the full thing.

Kind of confused why no one talks about this song. It’s beautiful.

    @HeyFella

Wow that artwork is so much better. We should continue this conversation in the Weezer thread as not to clog up this one, because I find this interesting and want to keep talking about it. I don’t think I’ve heard that particular demo, would you happen to have a link? Honestly I’ve always been fond of Freak Me Out from that album, it too could be reworked into a better song of course but what we got I still enjoy.

i know right? geffen f***ed it up, and it won’t be the last time.. ill get back on that soon

that demo was my baby for so many years and still is, it’s an acoustic office rehearsal with the band (you can hear rivers telling them which chord coming next) the lyrics so beautiful and dark:

it’s criminal he didn’t do anything with it, the home demo released has horrible green dayish “hey hey” totally out of place and some odd disco electric guitar on top of it - i don’t mind the disco guitar, i think what rivers was doing is make something upbeat and dance out of a sad dark song which is something he loves to do: see island in the sun or happy hour, feels like summer too! but it just didn’t work out and he maybe was left uninterested after that but man, it could work on ok human! that album will have NO guitars and i think this song could be supported by strings alone, beautifully so

but i agree, i always been a sucker for freak me out, i love that it stands out with the harmonics guitar on it and it has a feeling that the lyrics fits well too as corny it can be (the verses with the buy you a drink line like what ???) it grew on me a lot

haha the rezwee cover was the first one i shared itt for ppl to hear the song bc it just wasn’t right for fans to not know of it, it’s not just another demo it’s a crazy song! how many rock songs you hear with catchy hook and a piano solo breakdown that isn’t some corny symphonic rock opera s***???? legit classical bridge yet still a classic weezer tune, rivers nuts to have dropped that song i get that okh has no guitars but this would’ve been a perfect lead single for it!

like the second edit the dude used the drums from buddy holly!

YES i have a funny story for this song

so the red album was my first weezer album i got into actually and it has its fans itt too! at least two of my brothers says it’s their fav ☺️

anyway so i had the album on repeat loved the diversity and creativity and i saw the deluxe physical but didn’t know the song or the band well so wasn’t sure to trust if it were total s*** bag forced in or legit good stuff but i was like f*** it, i got it and oh my, little did i know what was on it... ALL ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ SONGS 🥵 yes even king f*** the haters

so when i first got in weezers fanbase community we talked about the spider and everyone was so negative about it and that’s when i realized rivers really gotta deal with bunch of old heads that are so full of s*** - you’re gonna die for a song like butterfly (which is beautiful don’t get me wrong) yet the spider is where you cross the line? both use insects as a theme (in fact the spider opening line is one of my fav of all time and really makes you think, yeh it’s ugly but it’s not born evil) and are acoustic slow ballads yet spider gets s*** on because what it has atmospheric synths? idk why! baffles me

so that was my first interaction / impression lol sticking up for the spider and still do today! my only grip in hindsight is the finale word which sounds insignificant but actually a huge mistake: when he sings “im insane”

it absolutely cancels the rest of the entire beautiful lyrics and stream of thought, no you’re not insane for thinking that spider deserves to live!

still a song i would for a while often relax to at night to fall asleep to, brought me peace

oh and that song you reminded me of while we talked about mb era stuff before i forget @HeyFella

do you know of “the organ player”? it’s this 2002 gem that the band never did anything with and that is a massive crime, it’s in my favorite obscure weezer song list it’s a beautiful song and a different one too with that keys we don’t often get in a weezer tune played by an extra musician brought for the sessions it’s just very smooth and melodic, melancholy no one should sleep on it and it really has to be on a weezer album 😭😭😭 rivers pleaseeeeee

oh also @HeyFella when i meant to bring up where geffen f***ed it up again (sorry got off tired im all over the place) was that speaking of the spider and the red album: the deluxe songs were rivers original version of the album in fact he announced pig as the first single off of it and dropped the demo for it at that time! how things have changed.. and what did it change was geffen, they heard it and wasn’t having it, no hits no bangers where’s the beverly hills grammy weezer? so rivers went back to the board did the amazing pork n beans and i think that’s where some heh stuff like everybody got dangerous came in i could be wrong in the timing of that tho

but uhh yeh if it weren’t for geffen we would have had a red with pig on it as the first lead single, then miss sweeney there too, an absolute classic amazing album, original with its structures switched up and the format too (no songs about girls or guitar solos) yet so good and creative that’s why fans were mad at it and they got it their way with ewbaite and white and im not mad they’re both classics added to now a good list of classics albums for one band that a lot ppl who like to write them off as just two good albums band, and more to come with van weezer and ok human (and the acoustic too if it happens, that should be a winner weezer never misses on those acoustic numbers) that’s a LOT of great albums

man i was so HYPED when we heard that burning sun was making it onto pacific daydream, a long fav gem of mine and OH BOY did rivers nail that rework, blows the original out the water goddamn so beautifllllllllll haaaaaaaaaaa top weezer song for me

that’s funny bc idk if rivers has ever shared the actual original red tracklist

not sure at top of my head if i can put things together of what would’ve been, ima have to research back into it but i sure can give you my alternative take on what a perfect red would be

    1 pork and beans
    2 greatest man
    3 troublemaker
    4 miss sweeney
    5 dreamin’
    6 pig
    7 heart songs
    8 king
9 the angel and the one
    10 the spider

now isn’t that a classic rivers penned that lives up to a 10 out of 10 classic weezer quality album?

(i switched up the order to make it flow together better)

omg @HeyFella the demo of this is such a pity is the missing puzzle !!!!!!!!thank you for making me check this out

so for years there was this song floating around and was rumored to be the early “this is such a pity” and it got us forever confused because there is absolute no resemblance

but know with this demo it makes sense, well kinda in how it got reworked in a rivers way, in here you hear in the intro the same riff from she who is militant then he adds in the verses we now know as this is such a pity

this reminds me of the hawaii situation from ewbaite days where it starts as:

    then became:

which ended up as jacked up if you can her the chorus on that last one is basically jacked up bridge, fascinating, those two original songs are killer tho he should keep em, rumor has it could be on van weezer but idk about that

she who is militant was nice too

Maladroit’s one of my favs tbh.

    1. Pinkerton
    2. White
    3. Blue
    4. Maladroit
    5. EWBAITE
    6. Red
    7. Green
    8. Make Believe
    9. Hurley
    10. Pacific Daydream
    11. Raditude
    12. Black

I’d have to listen to the bottom 6 again to properly rank them, but that’s how I feel now. Other than High as A Kite I felt nothing with Black.
