do u feel the same in regards to rhymefest writing for TCD

I don't get this at all. It sounds rough at times. The album is super blown out and compressed with a ton of digital distortion from the mastering process. Graduation and Late Registration are far more polished. You mean it has too many layers and overdubs? That it's overproduced?

also, the compression is an aesthetic choice

i don’t dislike it at all

flaws in art are part of the humanity of it

MBDTF feels like a work of art that tried to get ahead of criticism by covering up its flaws & trying to be uncriticizable in a way, if that makes sense. like you can tell Kanye had critics in mind when editing the tracks, rather than focusing on other aspects of the music.

Think this is a good way to put it

theres always this point with every piece of widely acclaimed art or media or entertainment when the overwhelming love just naturally produces this kinda reverse reaction even from people who love the project to death. kinda like too much of a good thing and you get bored exclusively loving someting. i noticed it with people turning on tpab (dumb drake fans running with it notwithstanding), people turning on random acclaimed movies like godfather etc. i had that with pink floyds dark side of the moon where i really couldnt play it at some point i played it too much. but it doesnt take from the thing in the slightest

This is something that happens a lot yea that’s true
I try not to do that but it may be a contributing factor, I just realized I don’t rly feel it like that and was wondering how to articulate it
I wish people talked more about this aspect in general well said

I get it, Kanye nowadays is washed and the biggest pos but this album is timeless. I get you might not like it but but calling it “overplayed” like its dance monkey is insane

I mean overplayed in a personal sense also think about it I’ve been in music nerd spaces since 13 years old lol

I get where ur coming from in a sense but to me what makes ye a god level curator is for his ability (pre-tlop at least) to turn 50 person collaborations into something that still feels like Ye. I just dont like when people give all the credit to pusha, cyhi, malik, rhymefest, consequence bc we dont really care about any of their solo music like at ALL besides push lmao so kanye is obviously bringing something to the table and I feel like u can hear that in gorgeous from the american apparel/south park lines

sometimes you think a piece ought to be perfect when you deem it perfect if that makes sense, especially something so acclaimed. so when you start finding your criticisms you just look at it from a less discussed perspective. i think its not that bad provided that your criticisms come from a solid understanding and youre not full on contrarian with it

Yea that’s a good point, I think for me usually it’s fine but it’s about suspending my disbelief sometimes I have moments where like
Take violent crimes for example, I used to love that song
But right after he talked about how it was all not written by him and seeing him the years after it’s like ok now I just feel like ur bullshitting it feels inauthentic not cuz solely it’s not written by u but yk?
That’s why I like yeezus a lot or LR for example because they both in dif ways have this very genuine very flawed air to them that feels distinctly Kanye and personal to him, yeezus has wildly f***ed funny ass moments as the most Kanye Kanye album and LR has the bear trilogy thing everyone talks about

definitely felt the same when I heard that abt violent crimes bc of the nature of the lyrics

and I think I just view MBDTF's aspiration to be seen as high art not as inauthentic but just another facet of kanye's personality the same way you see his manic outbursts as something distinctly kanye. that mixing of high and low culture is a huge part of kanye's project as an artist imo

All you're doing is rephrasing s*** Kanye said over a decade ago to promote Yeezus and cast his new album in a positive light. The album doesn't sound the way you describe it. It's a profoundly human and likably flawed record that could only have been made by him and the artists he hand-picked to elevate the material. There are no other MBDTFs in music history, as hard as others have tried.

In 2009-2010, when Kanye was running something between a bootcamp and a cult compound in Hawaii, he wasn't telling those artists "lock in or the critics will be mad at me." He wanted to create a work of art that captured what he felt at the time and cemented his legacy.

    Like...every artist ever.

MBDTF gets criticized for being ambitious and having unlimited resources, which isn't inherently a bad thing. We should be grateful that one of the GOATs wanted to make a classic. "Tryhard" has always been one of the most braindead critcisms of art and is more a sign of the times than anything.

LR is def my favorite ye album with CD close second so no disagreement here. Was just saying in regards to MBDTF because I've always saw it as the Kid A/Amnesiac type thing where a good amount of material was born from the same sessions so its weird to like one and not the other yk?

majority of Yeezus sounds dated af. Same with 808s. music is still good

I think this idea gets attributed incorrectly sometimes. I feel like that applies to the performance aspect, ie. the delivery of the vocalist or how the instrumentation sounds, etc.

The “flaws” in an album like MBDTF are 100% there; the extended outro in Runaway perfectly encapsulates that. MBDTF isn’t a clean record in any way imaginable. It’s rough, it’s raw, it’s mixed terribly, but the songs are brilliantly composed and crafted so it works.

The album is bursting at the seams with humanity and it doesn’t really give off a feeling of sterility at all

Yeezus runs circles around MBDTF for the reasons previously stated

    it embraces its flaws

it’s raw & rough around the edges

but it’s not undercooked by any means

unlike MBDTF, which tries to hide its flaws, features a ton of pop artists & traditionally popular instruments, and has that 2010-esque “every song needs to sound like an anthem” feel
