@DonutHole Like Gambino is another one that would have a “story”
Ye too if you want to talk about the reception of 808s to MBDTF
Cole as well from CW to FHD
Like I can name so many
Doesnt every artist have a story then?
How does that give Mac some advantage or whatever
(removing the fact that he's white in hiphop)
yeah all the other hiphop artists have stories too (some even fabricated) we discuss them as well
this thread is about mac miller tho and how him being white combined with other factors crafted this image of an exceptionally talented rapper (when in op's opinion and others, he's not)

none of them are white in a culturally black genre (so there's one aspect that makes it different )
and if u wanna make threads about them u are free to do so (expect backlash cuz only certain topics are allowed on ktt as evidently show in this thread)

tbh bruh I’m a black man & I always loved me some Mac
The talk about his skin tone making him better received or more likeable never was a factor in my decision respecting him
Not saying white artists place in a black genre doesn’t effect their careers
but for me which I believe many ppl can agree on, It literally was just the quality of music he created throughout his career
it’s very simple imo & I think it is for most Mac fans as well tbh
Bro literally shunned the mainstream white rapper trope to craft his own sound in a time of Macklemores and Asher Roth's and MGKs. He's beloved because it's clear he had the artistic integrity and drive to match his talent. Also his "early s***" is literally when he was a teenager like what. He hit his stride on Macadelic and never looked back

this basically
my post listed both him being white in hiphop and his untimely death as factors
for the white mediocrity: the term mediocre might sting and is harsh, I concur
but I mean as a rapper he seemed to be middling talent compared to his peers (he was in the same XXL freshman class as kendrick lamar, YG , meek mill, big krit and cyhi de prince)
I bolded big krit cuz he's a dope rapper that just released an interesting project rapping singing and s*** but we aren't raving about it the way we exalt mac's work
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPH-qB0iBSo(big krit is a better singer on this track than anything Ive ever heard from mac too, just my opinion tho)
how is Mac “mediocre” when he’s been co-signed by the likes of Jay and Kendrick, who are looked at as two of the greatest rappers of all time?
it sounds like you and @op just don’t f*** with dude, which is fine and y’all are free to say why you feel that way but it’s weird to imply that people are just d***riders for disagreeing when two of the greatest people in the field acknowledge that he’s an objectively great musician
Was seeing ppl call Faces one of the greatest mixtapes all time long before his death
Myself included

I literally posted that I think the term mediocrity is harsh
then explained why one might think mac is mediocre (in the grand scheme of his hiphop era, he doesnt measure up against his peers imo, it's ok to disagree with that)
co-signs are very cool but rarely phase me, alot of my favorite rappers have cosigned artists that I think are subpar or at the very least not as good as even my favorite rapper claims they are
jay said mac is "nice too" (idk what kendrick said) but I doubt they talked about his ""objectively great"" musicianship lol
lastly, Im not sayin y'all are d***riders at all but y'all are def being on the defense and it's hard to have an honest discussion that way
u can be his number-one fan as long as we can have talks that sometimes might offend some, it really doesnt matter imo

Like who are these peers who he didn't measure up to?
In his XXL freshman class? Apart from Kendrick, everyone in there is debatable. Krit and Meek less debatable because they've been releasing good projects but Meeks downturn in quality has been noticeable. YG? He released hits on hits yeah, but once that dried up what did he do that that really separates him from Mac? Cyhi the Prynce was bogged down by label issues and has one album, his last mixtape was in what 2015? Just by Mac releasing projects he's had a better career than him.
So he's at least 3rd/4th in his class.
Odd Future and associates? Only Tyler, Syd and maybe Frank have had comparable (definitely better in Tyler and Franks cases) careers. He had a better careers than Domo (disappeared), Earl (quality took a nose dive, also stopped releasing music), Vince (I haven't followed him since Summertime 05 but from what I hear he hasn't made any impact since) etc of that whole clique.
Other rappers who popped up in that period of time Sir Michael Rocks (disappeared), Logic (well documented artistry struggles), Ab Soul (also had a drop in quality after very good releases), etc, etc.
Your claim that he doesn't measure up to his peers is unfounded honestly. Maybe he wasn't among them but he could at least hang with best and had a consistent catalogue of releases that were definitely in the above average region. The same literally cannot be said for a high percentage of his peers because by *2018 (the year of Mac's death) they had all objectively dropped off or were no longer releasing quality music.
If you have a large number of artists that Mac "doesn't measure up to", I'd gladly love to know because right now I'm tempted to call cap.
*got the year of his death wrong
Mac is one of the greatest musicians of his era, I know people think he's just a corny white rapper but he's so much more than that
I hate to do this because his mom and fam don't want people doing it but his unreleased music is amazing, he was a true musician
If you think he's just a corny white rapper, fall down the rabbit hole and enjoy, we'll never have another like him
honestly he's pretty acclaimed as is (and was pre death albeit probably not to the same extent) - i don't really think it factors in at this point.
he ain’t ever been my fave but i think he’s got greatness sprinkled throughout his catalog.

this s*** immaculate
This song is some phenomenal s*** honestly.
I had a friend who hated Mac Miller with a passion. Always hating and s*** when we played his songs. She didn't just hate Mac, she actually hated anything soft and most, if not all white rappers (which Mac happened to be). But we didn't give a f*** and kept playing his s***.
We were smoking this one time, and it played and her of all people asked us to repeat it, we gave back all that negative energy she was giving us but did explain that it was a Mac Miller song. She kept asking us to play it over and over in the coming days/weeks/months. It literally became one of her favorite songs.
She was so rigid tho, and never let her love of the song make her explore Mac more but I always felt good that something got through.
you're a lame ass nigga @op
