that was your base pay
"If the employee's tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least $2.13 per hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference"
https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/wages/wagestips
Right, so the first few dollars you're making hourly in tips aren't even technically tips.
I just can't believe you guys don't tip this is blowing my f***ing mind.
Honestly servers do A LOT beyond just taking your orders and bringing out your food. Not saying that entitles them to quality tips from you/us, but they're definitely way underpaid.
Personally I just go the route of just avoiding eating out 99% of the time. I make better food myself, and I know where my hands have been
i’m a pescatarian and i compost
i don’t use plastic water bottles and i bike locally
i work in a tenants union
i own a business that pays its workers far more than livable wages while still turning a profit
what else do u want
Thats dope, but why are you grandstanding over tipping. Tipping is a terrible practice and allows customers to determine the wages of waiters in a way in which they cannot be held accountable.
If you want to gift a waiter than sure. I usually tip well but its not something I'd used to defend the rationale for tipping in America
All it does is generate complacency. I live in NYC, I'm not tipping you because you're poor. I'm tipping you because I appreciate some aspect of your work. I tip delivery drivers because I appreciate them getting me to a place in a timely fashion, especially if they're not annoying as f***. I tip my barber because he makes me fresh as hell. Etc etc
I am not for the love of God tipping someone because they let their employer f*** them. There are homeless people s***ting in the street and I seldom tip them. The argument that I'm supposed to tip someone to float the wage their employer refuses to pay is wicked to me.
Like imagine I didn't tip someone because I thought they were ugly. Yeah, I'm an a****** but that person still got f***ed in regards to their monetary compensation
I don’t get how the meal price equates a higher tip tho.
I completely get if it’s a big group then for sure.
But if someone goes and gets a $100 steak, why should the tip be higher? No offense to any server but I feel work put in to bringing that steak out is the amount of work done in bringing out a $12 steak
I feel you when you say bringing a $12 steak to the table is the same as bringing a $100 steak
There's a lot more that goes into service than that tho. You SHOULD be getting more well informed and attentive service at upscale restaurants
At the end of the day it's mostly principal. I would feel weird ordering a $100 steak and then tipping $5. That's just me.
So you agree waiters should ultimately be paid more and tipping should be phased out.
Yes for sure. I think everyone should feel this way.
We are exposed to the worst types of people in America on a daily basis.
Expecting people to be fair with some supposedly optional charity pay is a recipe for disaster.
That person is b**** made. He would never take that stance towards cutting emissions and tackling climate change.
Its not even a widespread practice. He really grandstanded over tipping.
Man I just left the airport and I tipped two baggage niggas 30 percent.
Some of these people are so childish. If I give someone a tip its because I want to. This weird moral bullying over an arguably braind dead practice is f***ing hilarious
You guys are really putting the wages of minority waiters in the hands of racists and going "well he is an a****** for giving a low tip" as if that changes the fact she's going to make 7.25 depending on the state she's in
These threads are stupid, stop making them
Americans tip waiters because its customary. We aren't going to stop, we don't care. It is stupid, and waiters are probably happier getting tipped than not.
I repeat stop making these threads
Ladies and gentlemen:
Virtue Signaling at its best ^
y'all should tip at McDonald's and Burger King too if you're doing it at a private business.

Virtue Signaling at its best ^
How is that post virtue signaling.
I'm saying who cares if you tip people well?
There are other problems in the world that matter
I tip because I got it like that
Those few dollars I tip aren't doing much for me & they'll help the server/waiter more
Right, so the first few dollars you're making hourly in tips aren't even technically tips.
I just can't believe you guys don't tip this is blowing my f***ing mind.
who is you guys 🤣🤣
we sayin they should just factor it in and not even call it tips. some restaurants have a flat 10-20% "service charge"
y'all should tip at McDonald's and Burger King too if you're doing it at a private business.
they arnt serving you. its like you tip people in hotels who serve you room service etc
if it's a sit-down sure
if i'm at a f***in local fast food place and they whip out that square app card reader prompting me to tip the cashier(??? who the hell is even bein tipped in this situation - is it jus an electronic tip jar?) i'm clickin on the No Tip button immediately
f that
tip jars r cool they are easy to recognize and easy to ignore and no one has to directly interact w/ it unless they want to
square app tellin me to tip for my fast food gyro?
no
they arnt serving you. its like you tip people in hotels who serve you room service etc
the waiters work for the employer the employer should be responsible for their pay not the consumers.
not tipping at all at local sit down places is cruel, if the service is good ofc. i just think the normalization of having to leave a 20% tip no matter what is too much.
who is you guys 🤣🤣
we sayin they should just factor it in and not even call it tips. some restaurants have a flat 10-20% "service charge"
Idek why he's acting like people don't tip.
The only times I never tipped a waiter was once and she dropped a plate on a friends lap.
Otherwise I don't care, if I'm dropping 100 on a meal, whats an extra 20.
I just think its a dumb practice
Right, so the first few dollars you're making hourly in tips aren't even technically tips.
I just can't believe you guys don't tip this is blowing my f***ing mind.
Exactly like yeah, f*** the business for paying their employees this way but that doesn't not make you an a****** for not tipping
y'all should tip at McDonald's and Burger King too if you're doing it at a private business.
No bruh
Most of them are all privately owned
I do think it should be gotten rid of and the restaurants should just pay them normally, they only started doing this because of the Great Depression and then never stopped for some reason. Oh I can’t pay them enough so tip them. And yea people complaining about it online is usually pretty lame but it does suck that they don’t get paid a regular wage, I don’t see why it’s even legal at this point tbh
No bruh
Most of them are all privately owned
where do we draw the line then?
Another thing American's are weird about. Certain restaurants should can include a set service charge in the bill if their service high class and they have the customer base for it.
Don't need random servers getting pissy when they don't get the tip. I'm not their daddy
