The thing that sucks is most of these guys were on the 'come up' 5+ years ago

They're putting out music. Why do I care about the commercial performance of guys who aren't pop stars? I listen to rappers who never made any money

  • DumpKing

F*** the come up all it does is destroy the art

Hip-hop has been pimped and exploited for so long I’d be happy if it never went mainstream again. Let the party die

    F*** it we ball

it's the end of days for rap

  • Benny Boy

    literally

  • i could write a whole dissertation on this

it’s a whole generation of dope ass rappers who have bars/punchlines, make hooks, can do boom bap, can get on trap beats, can get introspective, can make turn up records, have a defined aesthetic etc. literally everything you need to become a superstar in the 2010s.

that otr cypher is a slice of it. the truth is that with labels becoming so dependent on data, rap media being more clickbait focused than ever and leaning on more established names + drama for attention, and big established rappers moving away from signing and grooming new acts, these guys that represent the fullness of the art form are f***ed unless they find a way to go viral, which is incredibly difficult. i feel like i am one of those guys and im tryna essentially re-engineer this s*** to break into the game cause it’s just not set up to put more new artists on rn, and in turn it will be stagnant until it’s completely overhauled.

it’s only made worse by the fact that social media is monetized, so now the even the fans are apart of clickbait tactics, rehashing the same convos about our biggest stars to get pennies instead of talking about the new s*** coming out.

in previous eras, the industry was working to create new stars. now, you have to become a star in spite of the industry, outside of a select few artists that have the right co-signs and support from the door (and i salute those artists btw)

look at every big+middle class rapper of the 2010s… nearly all of them were signed to a big rapper from before because great rappers tend to see what non-musical people at these companies don’t see

kanye - big sean, cudi, cyhi, travis
    wayne - drake, nicki, tyga
    dre - kendrick
rick ross - wale, meek, stalley
    jay z - j cole, vic mensa
    ti - bob, travis, iggy
    rocko - future
    asap rocky - carti
dj drama - uzi, jack harlow
    young thug - gunna

and i can go on and on, tyler and rocky were the only guys i can think of off the top of my head that are superstars but weren’t under another artist, but they still both had major cosigns, kanye called yonkers video of the year like the week it dropped.

our ecosystem is so f***ed up and when people talk about what’s wrong with hip hop, i feel like nobody mentions this part. but great rappers tend to respect and want to support great rappers, whether it be with cosigns/features/signing them. we have way less of these super talented guys being signed by OG rappers who can give them a fanbase to attach to and build off, then we look around and there are no new superstars. of course! we abandoned the formula that gave us 80% of last decades superstars lol

Nah just expand your horizon. This been getting said every year since the 90s.

yea but it's more true then ever rn, who is younger that is actually good/ has the potential to craft an album that's a classic.

the only people I can name are:
    Marco plus (kinda maybe)
    Mavi
    itsjustmikey (ehhhhh)
    MIKE

etc. around that level but there not superstars and are kinda dull.

in the "rage" underground everyone is ass and punches in and are carti Clones, the only people that I think are good at rapping that I know of are:

    rekover jet
    Rexv2
    baretta
    slayr
    babyman( eh)
    untiljapan

I'm an out of touch 33 year old and I can't for the life of me get into any of these new gen guys. I get that maybe I'm not their target audience but it really feels like there is nobody under the age of like 25 making rap music that is just focused primarily on lyrics, bars, punchlines, and everything else that was cool a decade+ ago. Even if there are they don't seem to be breaking outside of their bubble of an audience.

Not here to complain about the current state of music but maybe there are some younger people here who can put me onto some guys that are making this type of music?

Maybe the "rage" rappers I posted but I don't know niggas are ass rn

veeze n lucki spit way more than those two do in that song

  • My advice is to stick with the music you grew up with. And vibe to the new stuff when possible.

Even if there was an amazingly talented rapper in his teens/20s, it just wouldn’t work for me im too old now.

Very dumb how you think over 25 isn't considered this gen when future and Rick ross were both in their 30s even before the peak of their careers in the 2010s and considered part of that era

It's not about the age it's about when you debut is what makes you part of a gen, just like how some others itt mentioned Veeze is a modern era Rapper as well

Kenny Mason, Samara Cyn, Serious Klein, Mavi, Ovrkast, Matt Proxy, La Reezy etc.

The Ageism argument towards rappers is insane to me.

Like Em didn’t get huge until 25-26. Fif didn’t have his huge run until he was 27-28.
    Ye and Jay at 26.
    DMX at 27

Hell, 2 Chainz didn’t get to blow up until he was 35.

Mind you, Future is 40 with the youth still looking up to his Wanda Sykes havin ass.

Moral of the story is never too late for any age to blow up and carry a new wave, whether lyrical or non-lyrical.
