saying the genre regressed then naming Carti as an innovator which one is it? nigga is part of the regression bruh became a 2003 punk rockstar then had a Wayne phase to sell his album

  • Oct 16, 2025

Been saying this for a while. A lot of iconic rappers that debuted in the 90s and 2000s were in their late teens of very early twenties.

Hov and ye dropped their debut when they were 26 and that was considered a late start back then but pretty common for the 2010s. And now the late 20s-early 30s are common for 2020 artists.

Because being an artists alone isnt the most viable career choice, so most are going through colleges or finding trades to finance their career or to have a backup plan

  • Oct 16, 2025

Idk about the verse as it pertains to OP’s hypothetical question, but in regards to evaluating newer talent against their predecessors: these new niggas just don’t have it. Not a single one of them.

And so, these old niggas can take advantage of this mentally handicapped generation’s lack of superstars to artificially extend their careers.

the genre has definitely regressed, the amount of truly interesting stuff each year has been spiraling down for over a decade

my point wasn't that age is a requirement for creativity and innovation but that it's usually where innovation happens, realistically... it's when artists are both fearless and deeply hungry to create something new, it's the younger generation that will shape their own sound as a deliberate and daring break from what came before, not some oldheads who already did that in their heyday who might keep fine tuning their craft but won't reinvent the wheel anymore... please let's not pretend that the handful of veterans who still put out great projects are actually moving the needle, it's oldhead s*** for an oldhead audience

a genre in which the only remaining standard bearers are the aging, gray giants of the past is a genre that is quite literally dying

Lots of innovation comes from younger minds I agree and what I said never disputed that. That doesnt mean the music is regressing though. You could argue it has plataeud but I dont see a regression.

But despite this my feeling is that I dont think there is an issue. Everything in life happens at later ages now. OP gave the example of when people have children. My guess is that this is a side effect of longer life spans and we will get the next set of popular rappers being in their late 20s and early 30s. So your example of Carti being in his early 30s isnt actually an issue

On the other hand though genres dip in popularity and eventually it will happen to rap. Maybe a dip is on the horizon.

it’s not corny, in the OP is f***ing Jay-Z. I been on this energy about Carti since he pivoted to WLR and niggas ate that s*** up for being different from what was happening in the rest of rap

you keep naming Carti because he was able to master a sound for the new generation of white kids but severely deteriorated any discernible lyrical quality from the music…it’s why them Dot features don’t really hit longterm cause Dot actually tryna show Carti how to make a real song…Weeknd too. that nigga don’t make actual songs anymore like that, it’s a repetitive drone that’s carried by the fact it’s a “new” sound so it clouds the fact that outside of that new sound, it’s not really innovating much. where the new flows? where the actual qualities showing themselves in other talented rappers? he took the rage fest part of Travis dark sound, took Future’s cadences/flows/voice and put a baby/deep voice on it, went back to punk rock era shows, and mashed the two sounds together to get what he have today you calling innovation.

you telling me Yeat, Ken, Lone, and Osamason are the future? cut that s*** out gang

lmk when Carti was making a song like back door until Dot walked into the studio or Timeless or any other songs he lets major artists carry him on that he couldn’t do himself that are more or less not even near his “innovation”

  • Oct 16, 2025
