Most likely because that was the last generation of people who weren’t force fed anything on the internet and truly built their tastes on their own through forums like this and others. Back when niches were actually niches and not just an illusion crafted by the higher ups to cash in on.

Forums got replaced by discords of kids just trying to leak dms and texts from artists that barely been famous for a few months. I think the reasoning is because the music lacks substance or originality so much so that these kids become more invested in the artists lifestyle not so much the art. If you were in your early 20s in 2020 the pandemic couldn’t have come at a worse time. Those are the years you really start to become whatever it is you’re gonna be in life. Seeing your age go up while still being in the same place in life or career made a lot of people give up hope.
