NYT got 3 authors to come up with this article
    https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/03/nyregion/mamdani-columbia-black-application.html

interesting mixture of 2 things going on here. first is that the DNC clearly didn't see him as a real candidate because very clearly NO opposition research was done at all in the primaries. second is that the DNC is now trying to smear him from the angle of what would have been considered "woke" by his opposition in 2020, but no one cares. interesting dynamic within the party imo

some guy on twitter with questionable views had the info sent to him and then independently the hack was tipped to the NYT. the hacker then told the NYT to talk to the guy who he gave the info to rather than doing it themselves. this is like saying the NYT shouldn't have reported on the intel about trump in post-2016 because it came from foreign intelligence adversarial to the US or people in the white house who were right wing. they got sent something by an intermediary who has questionable views, they didn't literally engage them for it
the NYT literally put out an editorial today praising Mamdani and saying the DNC needs to learn from him, and the actual NYT article has half a section dedicated to calling trump's attacks on him racist/etc.

IDK if it was nyt but the leaks this election year were not reported on by the newspapers explicitly even though someone found all of jd vances opposition/political research

"some guy on twitter with questionable views" is a funny way of describing Jordan Lasker, the white supremacist race scientist who actively advances eugenics, but maybe not as bad as the NYT authors describing him as an "academic who opposes affirmative action and often writes about IQ and race". its 100% journalistic malpractice

i don't know who the guy is on twitter but the NYT literally did not collaborate with him. they didn't go to him and ask him to mediate information. i don't even like the NYT and will agree they are extremely corrupt for other reasons but this is only an issue because people like mamdani. getting tips and coordinating with intermediaries is just how media works

im not really here to defend the media as much as i am to push people to at least hate them for actual real reasons
"they talked to an intermediary to get information they were tipped on" is not a valid reason or indicative of anything except lack of understanding on how the media works. do people think those who leaked information to the media that lead to the media exploration of the inner workings of charlottesville or the proud boys in 2017 were just federal agents or leftists? like i hate to tell people but the media solicits info from weirdos and radicals - including super hateful politically motivated nutjobs - all the time to get stories out (which, again, is not collaborating). this is just how the actual job functions. s***ting on them for using an intermediary for information (regardless of who it is) just makes you seem uneducated about what media is/does

the issue isn't solely about the NYT sourcing information from a known white supremacist. its journalistic malpractice to sanitize Cremiux/Jordan Lasker by describing him in such an obfuscatory way + the articles entire premise is a lame nothing burger. its essentially ragebait you'd expect from the NYP - "Mamdani lied about being Black to try and get into Columbia". its not like there was some substantial information about Mamdani that the NYT HAD to publish, it was just a pathetic smear attempt. lastly, as someone else pointed out, the NYT refused to publish leaked details about Trumps campaign last year because of "ethical guidelines surrounding hacked materials". obviously theres no "ethical standards" for such information when its about Mamdani
