I wish Purple Rain had 27 more songs
imagine hearing a long album and being like “i enjoy every song on here, i wish some of them were deleted from existence though”
that sounds insane, right?
on the contrary, when listening to a short album, “i enjoy every song on here, i wish there were more” is a completely reasonable thing to say
constraint is an art form, but so is excess, and neither is more valid than the other
still wrong
all music is art, just like all dogs are mammals
you’re thinking of artsy
No im not. The entire framing of music as art is wrong and eurocentric

you legitimately don’t understand what the word art means
200 is ridiculous but 25-30 really isn’t. As long as it’s quality it usually just extends the time getting to know an album, aka adds depth, which is value. And again, no one is engaging with albums as something to listen to in one sitting as one statement. Do you not realize that’s just not how people engage with music anymore? We are the only ones left doing that
Also viewing music as art is played out. Music is music. F*** the Beatles for making everyone view music as art
You can't just say music is not art. When historically it has been
you legitimately don’t understand what the word art means
And you don’t understand that it also has implications beyond its strict definition
You can't just say music is not art. When historically it has been
Yeah because we know who wrote the history books
You can't just say music is not art. When historically it has been
The people who were playing drums as a part of mountain climbing rituals, or playing sitars for meditation were not viewing it as art. Historically music was more spiritual than artistic.
And you don’t understand that it also has implications beyond its strict definition
i do understand that
doesn’t change anything, calling music “not art” just shows a fundamental misunderstanding of what art is
Yeah because we know who wrote the history books
Bruh, music is an art in all cultures. Communication doesn't always have to be art, but all art is communication. That's how we're able to absorb and digest what we take in with our senses. Art communicates bruh. Music itself is an art regardless of what you think the Beatles did. And besides, strictly speaking, 99% of music discussed here is art. Rarely we speak about anything outside of your framework for spiritual or communication focused music.

Wayne didn’t do anything for IANAHB in the first place
The physical version came out like 2-3 weeks after the digital version which was only available at first.

so it was a digital exclusive for less than a month? whoopty doo
When I first heard this album, I was still curious as to “what’s going on” after the album ended at the 9th song
Why didn’t he tell us what was going on for another 45 songs he left us on a cliffhanger
What’s going on with there only being 9 songs 😂😂😂😂😂

An album’s length is not an indication of quality. A 7 track or a 30 track album can both be equally good or bad
I think the issue is when an artist intentionally throws bullshit on the album to get more streams (AKA Drake the last decade)

Bro said only the whites value music as art 🥀

agreed
the guy i’m arguing with believes long albums should be shorter because albums can inherently only be good if Rick Rubin comes in at the last second & tells you to cut half the tracklist
Bro said only the whites value music as art 🥀
he doesn’t know the definition it’s weird
Yeah it was 2010
The guy you hate getting s***ted on >>

That’s where y’all are misconstruing me.
I’m not saying that all long albums are automatically are bad. There are plenty of long albums from this decade that I enjoy:
Donda
Un Verano Sin Ti
Whole Lotta Red
MUSIC
ICEMAN
Mr. Morale
OCTANE
Hurry Up Tomorrow
SOS
COWBOY CARTER
Just to name a few
But even on these albums, while I enjoy them overall, I do think they would be stronger albums if their tracklists were trimmed down just a tad
Which ties into the point that I’m saying, which is NOT that all long albums are automatically bad albums, but rather that, in the streaming era, a lot of mainstream artists seem to be adding as many tracks as possible to their albums to boost overall streaming numbers, even if it’s not the strongest possible song or tying into the overall album in any tangible way
