so it was a digital exclusive for less than a month? whoopty doo
which was unheard of at the time for a major artist...
agreed
the guy i’m arguing with believes long albums should be shorter because albums can inherently only be good if Rick Rubin comes in at the last second & tells you to cut half the tracklist
That’s not true at all
I’m literally saying exactly what @ShinNohara is saying, which you agree with
Short albums can be good or bad
Long albums can be good or bad
Albums can be too long (For All The Dogs) AND too short (Ye)
What I’m highlighting is how, in the streaming era, artists seem to be intentionally making their albums longer to throw s*** at a wall to see what sticks and to boost streaming numbers
which was unheard of at the time for a major artist...
Radiohead did it in 2007
there were no physicals the first week...

wow, a week without physicals
really wasn’t what i’m talking about lol
I really don’t get why @sab thinks I’m such a huge Ye stan
I haven’t been aboard that train since 2022, I think all of the music he’s dropped post-Donda has been utter garbage besides VULTURES 1 and (some of) Bully
My opinion on album tracklist length wasn’t formed by Yeezus, I was listening to GKMC every single day as a kid before Yeezus even dropped
That’s where y’all are misconstruing me.
I’m not saying that all long albums are automatically are bad. There are plenty of long albums from this decade that I enjoy:
Donda
Un Verano Sin Ti
Whole Lotta Red
MUSIC
ICEMAN
Mr. Morale
OCTANE
Hurry Up Tomorrow
SOS
COWBOY CARTER
Just to name a few
But even on these albums, while I enjoy them overall, I do think they would be stronger albums if their tracklists were trimmed down just a tad
Which ties into the point that I’m saying, which is NOT that all long albums are automatically bad albums, but rather that, in the streaming era, a lot of mainstream artists seem to be adding as many tracks as possible to their albums to boost overall streaming numbers, even if it’s not the strongest possible song or tying into the overall album in any tangible way
so clearly you don’t enjoy the albums in full lol
long albums are great if you like every song on them
you haven’t found one where you do

Wrong. A few of those, I enjoy every song, but there are a few songs that are a bit weaker than the rest or don’t really make sense in context with the rest of the album
For example, on ICEMAN I enjoy every single song but I would have left off Little Birdie and Don’t Worry because I think they don’t add anything to the album, and don’t make sense thematically with the rest of the songs
The whole “more songs = more value” doesn’t even make sense in the streaming era. If anything, that makes more sense in the physicals era, where you had to pay real dollars for every album you wanted to hear.
With streaming, everything you wanna listen to is completely free, and you have access to 100 million songs at any given moment. Why do you need an excess amount of songs from one artist when you can listen to whatever you want to listen to whenever you want to, and it’s not costing you a dime?

i get feeling that way from time to time, there are definitely some longer albums where i’m like “this song sticks out, would be better as a single or a bonus track instead”
but you’re ruining your own experience if you feel that way every time you listen to a longer album

But it’s not every time either lmao
I’m not trying to make some absolute statement so I apologize if it comes off that way
Anyone who thinks “long album = bad, short album = good” is being disingenuous
I just notice that in the streaming era, it’s more common for me to think “this song could’ve been cut” when the album is extremely long
I think the sweet spot for album length is between 10 and 17 songs
I think it’s really difficult to make a GREAT album if it’s less than 10 tracks and if it’s 18+ tracks
That’s where y’all are misconstruing me.

im confused what hes even arguing atp. what you said is right.

yea especially deluxes and bonus tracks now its just to boost sales.

as a listener i think 10-17 is good limit if i am not a fan of the artist but want to listen to project. if i like the artists 17-23 is better.
SOTY
We need Drake on the remix

oh then yea
i just remember your whole “constraint = art” thing
I think the sweet spot for album length is between 10 and 17 songs

Personally, I think the magic number for me is 13 tracks.
15 is good for a deluxe.
