I'm intrigued - gimme some examples on where you see this online
I can post songs i think are underrated, but now that i think about it this is very subjective so might bw tricky to formalize into a video essay
As for songs that stall out in terms of listens i can defo find examples
Whats interesting is if u took the same song and released under a new artist vs a famous one how would ppl respond differently
Obv the famous artist would get more plays im talkin about whether ppl like it
i think people who don't like small artists often times just aren't big enough fans of music to spend a lot of time listening to niche stuff. like how someone who isn't huge into physical art wouldn't know niche painters or spend their time learning about them. i think it's alright to not consume all media
I notice the opposite where people d***ride any random new guy and call them goated to seem like they “know ball”
But yeah, the bridge between underground and actual mainstream supe om is long and treacherous

Can’t spell it out cuz it thinks you’re saying ret*rted
Ive been observing this phenomenon where for the most part people are strongly biased to only listen to popular musicians
I think honestly people only care about artists associated with a larger movement. A lot if not most if my favorite songs are completely obscure soundcloud tracks with 1k plays.
But heres the catch, i noticed the vast majority of soundcloud songs comoletrly stall on listens after a few days post release, meaning that despite however many ppl liked the song, very few if any are going back to listen again.
I genuinely am confused like do people even care about music or is it all sum cherade to fit in with a larger crowd
People have always needed more than talent and musical skill to attach to artists for the long term. People want to believe that they’re experiencing a story and some type of narrative has to exist. That’s why branding and image and marketing matter. Even a group as talented as the Jackson 5 had to be sold to the masses that they were “discovered by Diana Ross” and they even had to attach her to their debut album as “Diana Ross Presents: The Jackson 5”.
The Beach Boys were consciously rebranded from teens who love to surf and go to the beach to the brainchild of the “musical genius Brian Wilson” who was the American a***ogue to a Paul McCartney or John Lennon, played as being in competition with the Beatles.
(I love Brian, he was a GOAT, but that’s besides the point)
And even with underground rappers nowadays that are all basically doing variations of the same sounds, diet Uzi, Dollar Tree Carti, ThuggerZero, Future Lite, but they have the image and branding of something “experimental” so their fanbases feel they’re experiencing something New.
It’s f***ed up but that’s what it is. Most of the people who genuinely seek out new musicians to listen to and are really going to follow them for more than a couple days, listen to more than one song, are probably musicians themselves, or at least in the industry.
People used to take pride in being early on an artist now they just want to be told who’s next
Eeeeeehhh I think that was like a specific moment in the blog and hipster era for music nerds. I'm sure the majority of history people don't listen to people without some sort of backing or support from a group of people

Doesn’t make what I say false. It is what people used to do at a period of time in the past
I’d also argue rock fans were similar in the 90s at least
most ppl don’t gaf about music beyond casually listening to whatever they’ve been introduced to / enjoy naturally

Lmaooo wow
Also as far as listening stalling they’ll push out a song upon release then stop if it doesn’t get a certain amount of traffic like the tiktok 300 views thing
People would rather post on a thread debating the drake and kendrick beef than go on a thread about an artist they never heard of then post whether they liked a few of their songs or not
Yea i feel that but like why u liking soundcloud songs then never listening again that s*** crazy to me
Liking could be a way to passively tell the algorithm you want a type of song in the feed
