cratedigging was a bigger thing before the internet i think, i think people these days just have a very low bandwidth for new artists and im not rly sure why, its almost like the old ktt mentality of spamming creative showcase has become the norm

I feel like that's cap tbh
cratedigging was a hobby for Musicians and nerds

undiscovered acts did not have the publicity to get album reviews that could guide potential buyers whether they'd like it or not

it just seems like more of a thing back then because it was a physical & social experience that people who did it would tend to remember

i agree with the claim that most of these unknown artists arent rly good enough to warrant a big fanbase but i see a lot of dudes stuck in that middle ground (like @BernieX alluded to before) where they get the exposure but dont retain much fandom or listeners despite often being very good musicians

To be honest with you these days I listen to less music at all

Driving I want to focus and wrong music makes me speed

    I wish I knew good new artists. I can't name one that's a 7/10 or higher imo since 2020

    Probably even before that

Ive been observing this phenomenon where for the most part people are strongly biased to only listen to popular musicians

I think honestly people only care about artists associated with a larger movement. A lot if not most if my favorite songs are completely obscure soundcloud tracks with 1k plays.

But heres the catch, i noticed the vast majority of soundcloud songs comoletrly stall on listens after a few days post release, meaning that despite however many ppl liked the song, very few if any are going back to listen again.

I genuinely am confused like do people even care about music or is it all sum cherade to fit in with a larger crowd

its hard to break out. If people dont know you exist they cant stream you. Being only on soundcloud limits your reach.

There’s a certain level of listeners you need for people to not feel like they’re investing in nothing

That’s why people have botted listeners for decades and labels have manipulated radio stations for longer

  • Apr 6

YouTube and SoundCloud created overnight stars because people could see things go viral in real time and wanted to be a part of something

So my experience comes from soundcloud, i think most soundcloud users especially those winding up on low play songs are probably into music, i dont think what im describing only applies to non music fans

i feel you. i also think that it's so much easier to make music now. anyone could make music with a phone or with cheap equipment. with that said, the market is so over saturated (especially on soundcloud, but also on other paid streaming services) that it's a hard and competitive atmosphere. it's really difficult to make a song that will become someone's favorite song. i think the amount of music out there makes it pretty easy to quickly disregard a song if it isn't something you absolutely love within the first 30 seconds or so. i also know from being someone who browses youtube beats and soundcloud tracks that there is a ton of junk in the mix with the good stuff. i imagine people that don't have a really deep affinity for music can get discouraged from searching pretty easily if they hear even just a few stinkers in a row

but @op unknown artists definitely deserve more love. it makes me shake my head when someone says rock/rap/pop is dead. they just aren't digging deep enough. i tried hard to build up the music scene in my city over the course of this decade and i learned the hard way that it can be tough to get people to f*** with you before you make it big. once i realize it's mostly my friends packing out shows and streaming my music, it's like oh i haven't really even made a lot of progress

Big facts, its hard to even tell what u like at a certain point and u do need a refined ear to find the good stuff
