telling u first hand my parents s*** on Q Tip all the time for being weird and not making music niggas wanna hear

And your parents are outliers considering tribe is one of the best selling rap groups ever

    Also to this

You can say they’re outliers but in my city and damn near region they aren’t. I’m not even tryna paint them in a negative light they’re both creative great people they just arent into Q Tip’s style

Saying Tribe is one of the biggest selling rap groups idk about that. Theyve sold like a collective 5M records. There just arent many groups but I feel like they still wouldnt be like a top 10 highest selling group

Q-Tip has said it himself, he made a calculated play after the first album to make his and the group more appealing to the larger black population

They changed up their fashion style, started wearing Polo etc
He knew what criticism they were getting as them niggas wearing African clothes

OutKast acknowledged this issue too, you heard them skits on Aquemini with them niggas coming to buy the album & say they weren't messing with OutKast no more vwyase they were too weird

It's a real thing, mitch's experience of what he heard from his parents is definitely something that was widespread and occurring all over the place

the difference is Andre aint stop wearing that weird s*** and if anything felt emblazened to go even further. I remember the pimp trick master click skits too lol.

Tribe AND Outkast also both have the fortunate luck of already establishing a solid black audience before said "pivot" versus Tyler who did it the opposite way.

He’s letting this get to him when he shouldn’t

This how it is for any artist with a big fan base. He’s just one of the few big artists that actually talks about his influences and tries to put people onto them

Spike Lee & Questlove etc have acknowledged how black entertainers almost engage in neo minstrelsy when they have to perform their black art to a mostly non black fanbase

I know it must feel messed up as a real nigga on stage to look down at a fanbase who picks you as one of the good ones when you probably have a lived experience that featured racism & disrespect from the same people who now say 'I Love You :Taylor '

    That is a great point

Tyler has bad foresight in that regard. I hope this doesn’t come off like I’m completely disagreeing with you also

and it's like you can subscribe to just keeping your art authentically and militantly black (e.g. $ilkmoney for example) but then you put a ceiling on your outreach.

It's a tangled web that niggas gotta weave man.

Syd drifted apart before this because she went on tour with them in 2011 and said the boys didnt take enough time to care for her or ask how she was doing

Basically didnt like being the only woman amongst a bunch of wild guys

I definitely think a lot of niggas was drinking the racism is ending kool aid in the early 2010s lmaoo

Oh yea definitely, times were edgy

But bro wasn’t labeled as a sell out for having white fans. It was expected with the alternative skater s***.

Admittedly it was newage at first but I just wouldnt say he necessarily cultivated a culture tho. I think he more capitalized off of a movement that he was a part of. Which is why he wasn’t as chastised in the beginning

    But In hindsight, L.

If they aren’t a top 10 highest selling rap group i wouldnt say they’re one of the highest selling

I love tribe to death too but even they exist in somewhat of a niche and they make the blackest music possible.

I definitely think you can be outcasted in any community not just the black community for having your own interest, thats basically the point im trying to make thats what comes with not being a monolith. Now in the case of people like Tyler & Donald i definitely think it turned into self hatred for them and I don’t excuse that at all but I don’t think we’re having genuine convos when we act like our community is somehow different from every other community and all accepting. That plus I do think both of them have also helped me when I was younger feel a bit more understood as a child and I was also luckily able to identify that I didn’t need to adopt their anti blackness maybe because I was already deeply immersed in blackness as a child and loved it

Syd actually was a heavy defender of their right to say slurs i can post the interview if yall want

But i do think w the slurs thing there were multiple closeted gay OF members and i think they knew that even then on top of being edgy
